The Morning of Our Lives
Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers (LocoStavos) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It hurts me to hear, to see you got no faith in yourself.
It bothers me now to watch you, you got no faith in your own self.
You listen more to your friends than to your own heart inside.
Well, you listen to them, oh but you hide.
You don't got nothin' to be afraid of.
You're not as bad as you think.
And you're always puttin' yourself down,
But I'm just gonna tell you that I like you.
Darling, you always put yourself down, but I like you.
That's all I came to say.
Then there's no need to think that other people can do things better than you can do 'em
Cause you got the same power in you.
I got faith in you. Sometimes you don't have it in yourself,
But I got faith in you.

And our time is right now, now we can do anything we really want to.
Our time is now, here in the morning of our lives.

And it ain't just me who thinks so, dear, I asked my friends.
Now, Leroy and Asa and D. Sharpe,
Tell her not to be afraid.
Tell her it's okay.
Tell her it's all right.

And our time is now, we can do anything we really believe in.
Our time is now, here in the morning of our lives.

Dear, I asked Leroy and Asa and D. Sharpe, and they said,
Don't you love her too?
Then tell her she's okay.
Tell her she's all right.
You're okay, dear. There's nothing to feel inferior about. You can do it.

And our time is now, we can do anything you really believe in.
I know it.
Our time is now, here in the morning of our lives.
Our time is right now, you can do anything you set your heart on.
Our time is now, here in the morning of our lives.

We're young now. Right now's when we can enjoy it.

Now's the time for us to have faith in what we can do.
No need to fear, cause now's the time to have faith in what we can do.

If this song doesn't inspire a wide grin and a wide open heart, I don't know what to do with you.

saw Jonathan play a solo gig in 1979, just him, a mike, a guitar and an amp. halfway through the show he done away with the mike. the crowd were absolutely blown away and totally silent in awe of a genius. I've seen everybody who's anybody from 1970 onwards and that was the best gig I ever witnessed in my life.

This was my prayer when I was 16 years of age - and it still is 34 years later!

Insane Gaming

listened to this on Spotify and thought it was some indie music from the mid 2000s, but was blown away to see it was from the 70s, way ahead of its time

Please Rewind

It's crazy when you find how early a type of sound was created, most music goes way back and people had vision that just wasn't ready for the masses at the time.

I keep reading comments like this from young'uns who are amazed when they find out their contemporary musical heroes aren't the innovative geniuses that they thought they were. Yeah kids, you didn't invent the wheel.

Man Out Of Time

I had varied influences and tastes as a kid of the late 60's early 70's, mostly good. It was my absolute idolation of this song when I was 14 that made me first realise there was a bit of a difference between me and my schoolmates. Punk arrived very soon after and rescued me forever, although I was never an 'actual' punk. Jonathan was as 'punk' as anyone who ever came from the UK. In a nutshell....this song changed my life.

gooner brain

Still sounds great & still got the album on vinyl.
