Illumination
Jonathan Wilson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

See the one eyed candies with the gory shell
See the newbian women with the queen to hell
See the western light it's beginning to dim
See questions of birth illude fingers of beckoning

Through the ice and snow I see them come above of the trees
Through the eyes of the child I see the soldiers own relief
Through the poring rain I see the city catch on fire
Through the shallow river bed I see my dreams fly high

Wild Bill told me he has a big check on the way
Don't show me how to paint the dawn of day

Overall Meaning

In the first verse, Jonathan Wilson seems to be observing different people and things around him. The "one eyed candies with the gory shell" could be a reference to drugs or possibly even fireworks. The "newbian women with the queen to hell" is a bit more cryptic, but could potentially be referencing a group of women who are following someone or something blindly, even if it is leading them towards destruction. The "western light" could refer to the fading of western culture and the questioning of one's place in the world. And the "questions of birth" allude to the confusion and uncertainty that can come with starting a new chapter of life.

The second verse also contains a series of vivid images. "Through the ice and snow" could represent obstacles that people must overcome. "Through the eyes of the child" suggests a sense of innocence or a fresh perspective. "Through the pouring rain" could represent difficult times, and "through the shallow river bed" could represent the freedom of dreams or aspirations that can take flight.

The final line, "Don't show me how to paint the dawn of day," could be interpreted in a few different ways. It could represent disillusionment with the current state of the world and a desire to not have false hope or idealism pushed onto oneself. It could also represent a sense of self-reliance and wanting to find one's own way without being told what to do or believe.
