Ysma's Song
Jonathan Young Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was a boy at my daddy's side
Papa, the royal mortician
Revealed to me in secret signs
The mark of the magician

And daddy was no dummy
Did outrageous things with a mummy
And often the stiffs that he would shrive
They'd look better dead than they did alive

I studied well, I learnt the trade
I thought my looks would never fade
If I could find that recipe
To give eternal youth to me

It was always my ambition
To use papa's tuition
To gain some small remission
From the vagaries of time

Every little ray of sunshine robs me of my youth
Who to blame? Who the one? Who to curse?
You know the only one to blame
Would be my enemy the sun

(Come on) Snuff out the light
Claim your right to a world of darkness
Snuff out the light, neophytes
Of a world of darkness

Super, baby, turn me on
Every wrinkle soon be gone
I could squeeze myself with glee
The promises you made to me

I've really stopped at nothing
Murder, treachery, and lying
Whatever it takes to keep my looks
You really can't blame a guy for trying

Snuff out the light
Claim your right to a world of darkness
Snuff out the light, neophytes
Of a world of darkness

Snuff out the light
Claim your right to a world of darkness
Snuff out the light here tonight

Apparitions of eternal darkness
Spiraling in circles through the night
Creatures of beguiling blackness
No more squinting in the light
Bats and owls and coiled sea dragons
Crocodile and carrion beasts
Swirling in the growing darkness
Join us in the coming feast

Spectre, wraith, and apparition
Spirit, demon, phantom shade

Salamander, serpents, dog-faced devils
Dance and watch the dying sunlight fade

Overall Meaning

The song "Ysma's Song" by Jonathan Young is a fictional story of a boy who learned the family business from his father, a royal mortician. The father revealed to him in secret the "mark of the magician," and together they did "outrageous things with a mummy." The son then took over the family business and studied well to learn the trade, hoping to find a recipe that would give him eternal youth. Throughout the song, the singer blames the sun for robbing him of his youth and expresses his desire to snuff out the light to claim his right to a world of darkness.

The lyrics suggest a deep fear of aging and a desire for eternal youth. The singer is willing to go to great lengths, including murder, treachery, and lying, to keep his looks. The repeated phrase "snuff out the light" represents his desire to live forever in darkness, away from the sun that he blames for his aging. The song creates a spooky atmosphere as the singer imagines creatures of beguiling blackness and spirits dancing and watching the dying sunlight fade.

I don't wanna be that person but I don't think Grimm really counts as a villain but seeing hollow knight in this made me internally screech so it doesn't really matter

@sugarrmoon

id say he does- pretty much the entirety of dirt mouth says that they're suspicious, and Brumm says that the ritual is bad bad, and you should banish the troupe.

@furyleferret2288

Old comment I know but

Maybe not a villain per se but he sure seems to be at least a tad bit antagonistic in nature.
There's implied brainwash (When you get rid of the troupe and Brumm goes to dirthmouth)
Some characters being suspicious of the troupe (a notable one being the White lady)
And it's also implied that by helping him, you are giving him a vessel to reincarnate into (This taken from certain dialogue and what's implied by the White lady by saying the Grimmchild and the Knight are similar in nature)

@evagarcia865

@@furyleferret2288 Actually, Grimm himself is just a vessel for the beating heart thing in the background of his nightmare king battle. It needs to continue the ritual to gain another host. In this case, the Grimmchild, who will eventually grow up to be the next Grimm
