Rock It
Jones George Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you wake up in the mornin' and you wonder
Why no one's beside you where I usually lay
And you think you hear the sound of distant thunder
Well, that's just your old rock (just your old rock) a-rolling away.

I was a rock standing strong for you
For there was nothing that I wouldn't do
No matter the cost I was ready to pay
Now you say I'm only holding you down
Like some old rock you've been draggin' around
Yes, I'm your old rock (just your old rock) but now I'm rolling away.

I'm rolling away on a downhill grade
But I'm gonna come to rest at a mountain of love someday
'Cause I finally understand if you're resting on shifting sand
Well, even a rock (even a rock) will go a-rolling away.

I was a rock standing strong for you
No, there was nothing that I wouldn't do
No matter the cost I was ready to pay
Now you say I'm only holding you down
Like some old rock you've been draggin' around
Yes, I was your old rock (just your old rock) but I'm a-rolling away.

Honey, I was your rock (just your old rock) now I'm rolling away.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jones George's song “Rock It” are full of vivid imagery and symbolism. The song is about a relationship that has come to an end. The singer starts by describing a morning where the person wakes up alone and hears the sound of distant thunder – which is actually just the sound of the rock he has been for her rolling away. He then goes on to describe how he used to be a rock that stood strong for his partner, willing to do anything and everything for her without hesitation. However, he has come to realize that she now sees him as a burden, like an old rock that she has been dragging around. So he decides to roll away, to let her go her own way and to find his own happiness.

Throughout the song, the lyrics use various metaphors to describe the situation. The image of a rock is a poignant one, representing strength, stability, and steadfastness. The singer was willing to be that rock for his partner, but now he has become a burden to her. The rolling away of the rock represents the singer's decision to leave the relationship behind and move on, to find a new place to rest and to build a new foundation for himself. The idea of resting on shifting sand is also used as a metaphor for an unstable relationship, one that is not built on a solid foundation. Even a rock will roll away under those circumstances.

Overall, the song captures the pain and sorrow of a relationship that has come to an end, but it also suggests that there is hope for the future. The singer may be leaving behind his old role as a rock, but he is rolling away towards a mountain of love, where he may find a new foundation and a new purpose. The song's bittersweet tone and heartfelt lyrics make it a powerful example of country music at its best.

My good friend tried to get George to autograph his copy of this 45 and George refused. He didn't want to have any connection to this record. Too bad, he didn't realize what a great recording it was, and still is!
