Call Me Irresponsible
Jones Jack Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Throw in undependable too
Do my foolish alibis bore you
Well I'm not too clever - I just adore you
Call me unpredictable - tell me I'm impractical
Rainbows I'm inclined to pursue
Call me irresponsible - yes I'm unreliable
The lyrics of "Call Me Irresponsible" by Jones Jack explores the fear of being judged for one's flaws and shortcomings by a loved one. The song's persona acknowledges that he might not be the most dependable partner, begging the receiver to call him all sorts of unreliable and undependable names, but he cannot help how he feels about her. The persona's sense of responsibility towards his lover is unapologetically irrational, a feeling he describes as "irresponsibly mad for you." By acknowledging his inadequacies and lack of finesse, the persona challenges the idea that love must be perfect for it to be worth it. He recognizes that he might not be a perfect lover and risks being seen as irresponsible, and that is okay so long as his love for her continues to grow.
Additionally, the song is an exploration of the concept of unpredictability in love. The persona admits to being unpredictable, implying that he might not be the easiest person to be with or read, yet he insists that his lover should indulge him. He argues that his impulsiveness and quest for rainbows are expressions of how deeply he loves her. Despite being flawed and unpredictable, the persona remains captivated by his lover, and he makes no apologies for how he feels about her.

I absolutely love this version of the song. My dad looked a lot like Jackie Gleason and could be as bombastic as his character Jack Griffith in Papa's Delicate Condition. For all his faults though, he was nuts for my mom and never strayed from her for love nor money. Miss you, Pop.
