Jonghyun had been active in music since he was in junior high school. He was in a band called ZION and participated in many music festivals in his area. He was the band's bassist. During one of the band's show performance Jonghyun was scouted by SM Entertainment. Before his debut with SHINee, he sang a duet with Zhang Li Yin in the song “交错的爱 (Wrongly Given Love)” for her Chinese album.
Jonghyun was discovered at the 2005 S.M. Casting System. In 2008, he was chosen as a member of the group Shinee, the 5-member boy group debuted on May 25, 2008 on SBS's Inkigayo.
In November 2010, it was revealed by SM Entertainment that Jonghyun, along with TRAX’s Jay, Super Junior’s Kyuhyun, and rookie singer, Jino, had formed a project group, S.M. The Ballad, under their label. The group focuses more on ballad rather than pop and R&B themes. The group released their debut album, "너무 그리워 (Miss You)", on November 29, 2010. They debuted on November 28, 2010 on SBS's Inkigayo with their lead single, "너무 그리워 (Miss You)". They also promoted another single from the album, "Hot Times (시험하지 말기)".
In February 4, 2014, SM Entertainment revealed that SM The Ballad will make a comeback with new members, Jonghyun being the only one from the original formation. It was later revealed that he would be singing, together with Girls' Generation's Taeyeon, the title track of the new album, "숨소리 (Breath)".
In October 2010, Jonghyun was one of twenty idols from various South Korean groups that recorded the song, "Let's Go," for the purpose of increasing public participation in the 2010 G-20 Seoul summit. He provided vocals along with label-mates Sungmin, Seohyun and Luna.
In the 4th mini album "Sherlock", Jonghyun had written the two songs "늘 그자리에 (Honesty)" and "알람시계 (Alarm Clock)". The song "Honesty" is written to give thanks to their fans who have stayed by their side with unchanging love until now. The other song, "Alarm Clock" which is also co-written with fellow member Minho, is about wishing to wake up from a nightmare of past break-up. He also wrote for multiple SHINee songs including "너와 나의 거리 (Selene 6.23)" (album "The Misconceptions of Us") and "상사병 (Symptoms)" (album "Everybody"). Jonghyun fully composed the collaboration track with IU, "Gloomy Clock" in IU's 3rd album "Modern Times". He also fully composed, wrote and lead the vocal direction for Son Dam Bi's digital single, "Red Candle". Not only did Jonghyun compose and write the song, he also took part in the vocal directing. The lyrics relate the characteristics of a candle to someone in love, who feels excited and nervous at the same time.
As a DJ for MBC FM4U's midnight radio show "Blue Night" Jonghyun has revealed his newly written songs on his radio show which he has prepared for a special corner called "Blue Night Lyrics, That Man's Composition". Back in June, DJ Jonghyun tweeted: “As I started Blue Night, I contemplated on how to incorporate myself well into the program… As expected, the conclusion is communicating with listeners and music! That’s why I have prepared a project where I personally write a song pertaining to a listener’s story and let you hear it. The name of the corner is ‘Blue Night Lyrics, That Man Composition’. It won’t be aired every week, but it will be aired once every few months as a special corner, so please send in a lot of stories. I’m accepting stories through the homepage.”
MBC FM4U have revealed starting from July 7th, they will be releasing the self-composed and self-written songs of Jonghyun. Furthermore it was stated that Jonghyun has written a total of 7 songs and that they will be revealed succession over several weeks.

JongHyun's song Suit Up is about getting ready for a night out, and how the appearance is important to make the night more memorable. The lyrics describe a man who is trying to dress up his best for the occasion. He is struggling with his tie and feeling drowsy but wants to look presentable. He asks the woman close to him to hold him up and pull him close while he tries to get everything set.
As the night progresses, the man becomes more confident and tries to impress the woman with his dance moves, telling her to close her eyes and follow his lead. He also wants to know what the woman's heart longs for and what she truly wants to say. He assures her that she doesn't need to hide anything and can be herself.

The wedding was perfect. The most beautiful thing you could've hoped for. As you're sitting on the bed, you try to hold back your tears of joy. He comes in, shutting the door.
"What's wrong?" he asks.
You can't answer the question, too absorbed in the contemplation of his beauty. You still cannot believe this happened to you. He smiles gently and sits next to you.
"Hey, jagiya... Don't cry."
"How could I not be crying when my husband is as perfect as you..."
He laughs slightly and puts his hand on your cheek. You chuckle as he kisses you softly.
"Are you giggling because you're nervous?"
"No, because you're cute."
"Hey", he smirks, "It's not what you were supposed to say!"
"Oh, what was I supposed to say?"
He doesn't reply and starts caressing your lips with his finger. You blush as you realize his gaze changed. He stares at you deeply and you can only imagine what he's thinking right now. Well, what were you expecting? It's your wedding night, after all. You put a hand on his arm and he starts kissing you, in a more intense way than earlier. You wrap your arms behind his neck and he puts his arms around you. You're almost laying on the bed when he backs away.
"What's wrong?"
"Well, you can't really undress me in this position, can you?" he winks.
You blush as he chuckles again.
"This suit is getting uncomfortable."
He takes off his jacket and his bowtie, lets them drop on the floor and starts unbuttoning his shirt. You grab his hand.
"Stop. I'll do it for you."
He raises an eyebrow, surprised but apparently turned on.
"I'm not going anywhere baby, don't worry."
He still accepts it and comes back on top of you. You don't even have time to finish undressing him that he delicately takes your veil off and drops it next to his suit. He starts undoing the lace of your dress but stops, smirks seeing your red cheeks and kisses you again. The rest goes naturally, you grab him, you hug him, you feel him.
It was your best night ever. You remember everything, including falling asleep in his arms. But, when you wake up, you know it's sad, somehow. This was meant to be a beginning so how comes it feels like it was a goodbye? He's gone. The suit, the bowtie, your dress, your veil are all gone. You look at the morning sky through the window. It was all just a dream, wasn't it? But... Somehow... He's gone but it's like you can still feel him. It's like you hear a whisper, a voice coming out of nowhere, that says : "I'm still with you". Tears are flowing over your face. That's right. He's gone, but he's still with you.

This song will always remain one of my favorites. I hope that we don't remember Jonghyun's songs as sad and longing. They were also sexy. They were sensual, uplifting, and mesmerizing. They were catchy, gentle, and funky. They are amazing. Jonghyun was an incredible song writer and composer. I will always celebrate him for his versatility and brilliance as an artist. Thank you for all of your hard work, Jonghyun. You did more than well.
