I Need You Now
Joni James Lyrics

If I ever needed you
I need you now
I can't remember when
I've ever been so blue

If I ever needed love
I need it now
I feel so all alone
I don't know what to do
No day or night goes by
When I don't have my cry
I feel like I could die
From wanting you

I can't ease my aching heart
But you know how
If I ever needed you
I need you now

No day or night goes by
When I don't have my cry
I feel like I could die
From wanting you

I can't ease my aching heart
But you know how
If I ever needed you
I need you now

Lew Douglas did this stunning arrangement. Joni was always very sad the record didn't get released because of the Eddie Fisher version recorded a week after she did the original but rushed out by RCA. When M-G-M was rereleasing 10-inch LPs as 12-inchers and adding four songs she realized she could release the song that way, even though M-G-M never put unreleased singles on albums. Her fans were shocked to see this title on the new album cover as no one ever knew the song had been hers first.

If they had been released at the same time  I have no doubt Eddie Fisher's up tempo version would have exclipsed Joni's. Eddie was very gracious to say that,

One of Joni's greatest singles, recorded at the same session as "My Love My Love" and "I'll Never Stand in Your Way." This one was to have followed "My Love My Love" but meanwhile Eddie Fisher discovered the song and recorded an up-tempo version with RCA rushed out. With Joni having six (!) sides on the charts concurrently at the time MGM could not release yet another. When Fisher heard the James version years later was astounded and did tell her as far as he was concerned she had the hit.

I love Joni, and I love this version of I Need You Now, although Eddie Fisher had the big hit. I beg to differ with JubalCalif, Eddie Fisher did not have a big ego. He was very charming, and gracious and I am sure he was quite sincere when telling Joni that her song was the "hit". I have seen photos of Joni with Eddie being crowned King and Queen of Pop. Those were the days of good music and great singers like Eddie and Joni.
