My Heart Stood Still
Joni James Lyrics

That's all I meant to do
And then my heart stood still
My feet could step and walk
My lips could move and talk
And yet my heart stood still
I could tell you knew
That unfelt clasp of hands
Told me so well you knew
I never lived at all
Until the thrill of that moment
When my heart stood still
I took one look at you
That's all I meant to do
And then my heart stopped right there
My feet could step and walk
My lips could move and talk
And yet my heart stood still
Though not a single word was spoken
I could tell you knew
That unfelt claps of hands
Told me so well you knew
I never lived at all
Until the thrill of that moment
When my heart stood still

I took one look at you
At first glance, I saw you
That's all I meant to do
I only intended to look once
And then my heart stood still
But my heart felt like it skipped a beat upon seeing you
My feet could step and walk
Physically, my body could still move
My lips could move and talk
And I could speak as normal
And yet my heart stood still
But emotionally, I was completely captivated by you
Though not a single word was spoken
We didn't need to say anything to understand each other
I could tell you knew
I could sense that you felt the same way I did
That unfelt clasp of hands
Even though we didn't touch, it felt like we were holding hands
Told me so well you knew
It was clear that you were feeling the same intense emotions as me
I never lived at all
Before this moment, I felt like I was just going through the motions of life
Until the thrill of that moment
But seeing you changed everything
When my heart stood still
My heart was so full of emotion that it felt like it had stopped beating

Joni seems to be forgotten or at minimum, is overlooked today with all the theatrics and auto-tune editing that goes on in recording studios. It's worth stating that her pure, straight-forward singing style stole the hearts of many in the 1950's. Great track.

The first LP I ever owned was Joni James' album "In the Still of the Night" which I won at a dance contest. 65 years later, I still have it.
