Somewhere in the Night
Joni James Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Somewhere in the night chasing rainbows that have no end
In the misty night, you are mine and you hold me fast
But dreams have a way of calling it a day
They seldom last, our dreams have past
But in my lonely flight,
I'll keep searching till time is through
Somewhere in the night till I find you
In the misty light you are mine and you hold me fast
But dreams have a way of calling it a day
They seldom last, our dreams have past
But in my lonely flight,
I'll keep searching till time is through
Somewhere in the night, till I find you
Joni James's song Somewhere in the Night is a melancholic ode to longing and search for love. The lyrics evoke a sense of mystery and uncertainty, as the singer searches for her beloved "somewhere in the night." She chases shadows and rainbows without end, hoping to find her soulmate. The misty night is a metaphor for her confusion and fear of the unknown. However, in the embrace of her imaginary lover, she finds temporary solace. The chorus repeats the phrase "Somewhere in the night until I find you," emphasizing the persistence and determination of the singer's search.
The song's theme of searching for love amidst uncertainty and despair is relatable to many people. The lyrics are simple yet poignant and Joni James's soulful voice adds to the emotional depth of the song. The use of metaphors such as shadows, rainbows, and misty night creates a dream-like quality to the song, adding to its overall appeal. Somewhere in the Night continues to be a classic love song that resonates with audiences even today.

Joni recorded this live in the studio in Los Angeles with a group of premiere West Coast jazz musicians. One side of the album was done one night, the other side two nights later. No second takes, no editing, no splicing, this is it. Took a lot of nerve, I think, but all she told me is she really enjoyed the experience and so did the musicians. M-G-M didn't know what to think of this project but, guess what, it made its recording costs back and much more.

Nice. The melody is the theme song from the forerunner of all cop TV shows, 'Naked City'.
