Goodbye Pork Pie Hat
Joni Mitchell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When Charlie speaks of Lester
You know someone great has gone
The sweetest swinging music man
Had a Porkie Pig hat on
A bright star
In a dark age
When the bandstands had a thousand ways
Of refusing a black man admission
Black musician
In those days they put him in an
Underdog position
Cellars and chittlins

When Lester took him a wife
Arm and arm went black and white
And some saw red
And drove them from their hotel bed
Love is never easy
It's short of the hope we have for happiness
Bright and sweet
Love is never easy street
Now we are black and white
Embracing out in the lunatic New York night
It's very unlikely we'll be driven out of town
Or be hung in a tree
That's unlikely!

Tonight these crowds
Are happy and loud
Children are up dancing in the streets
In the sticky middle of the night
Summer serenade
Of taxi horns and fun arcades
Where right or wrong
Under neon
Every feeling goes on
For you and me
The sidewalk is a history book
And a circus
Dangerous clowns
Balancing dreadful and wonderful perceptions
They have been handed
Day by day
Generations on down

We came up from the subway
On the music midnight makes
To Charlie's bass and Lester's saxophone
In taxi horns and brakes
Now Charlie's down in Mexico
With the healers
So the sidewalk leads us with music
To two little dancers
Dancing outside a black bar
There's a sign up on the awning
It says, "Pork Pie Hat Bar"

And there's black babies dancing
Tonight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Joni Mitchell's song "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" pays homage to two jazz legends: saxophonist Lester Young and bassist Charles Mingus. When Charlie speaks of Lester, it's a tribute to Young, who was nicknamed "Prez" and was known for his smooth and soulful playing, and sometimes wore a pork pie hat. The song also references the struggles that black musicians faced during that time, a period when their talents were often overlooked, and they were relegated to underground clubs and chitlin' circuits.

As the song continues, Mitchell describes how love, too, was a struggle during that time. Young, who was black, famously married a white woman, which caused a scandal and led to the couple being driven out of their hotel room. Mitchell implies that love is never easy, especially when societal norms prevent the one you love from being accepted. The lyrics turn hopeful in the last verse, as Mitchell describes the joyous scene she and Mingus witnessed when they surfaced from the subway and heard music and children dancing in the streets. Despite the danger and oppression, music, dance, and culture always found a way to thrive.

For the people who appreciate this record, if you didn't know: The melody that Joni has written the lyrics to is a transcription of John Handy's improvisation on this tune from the seminal album Mingus Ah Um. Go listen, it's a beautiful solo and Joni's poetry fits it equally beautifully.

@sierramike5259

One of my favorites both Mingus, AH UM in particular as well as Joni. Mixing them together is sublime...AH UM is a Jazz treasure on par with Miles ,"Kind of Blue"...it is amazing that we the audience are so lucky to have had these artists and have the appreciation of listening to them....

@eileenolanghaim8855

@@sierramike5259 Mingus Ah Um is a seminal jazz album, although personally I think The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady was better. That being said this is a wonderful rendition and Jodi did it justice.

@sierramike5259

@@eileenolanghaim8855 This album was a big risk for both of them musically. Joni always considered her voice to be an instrument and part of the composition which I think is why she had strange turnings on her guitars and probably didn't do instrumentals. I guess somehow Mingus felt this would translate into his music (as he picked her to do this last project) and he was right. The appreciation of this album grows as time goes by...PS: wouldn't be great to be sitting in a little club somewhere late at night listening to her sing this...wow...
