The nurse at 1:14:00 really was an angel. Giving that poor boy the only comfort he will ever know for the rest of his life. The poor lady is so heartbroken for him. And of course later when she tries to help him pass on she is stopped immediately by that cruel bastard doctor. I love how the priest handled him there towards the end of the film. This film is so powerful that the universal opinion on it is simply this - nightmare fuel. The scariest movie any of us have ever seen. Donald Sutherland as Jesus was a nice touch. He really nailed that role.

My father survived for 20 years "locked in syndrom" communication started like this he could only blink with his eye's but we communicatted, and he had peace with it. later he could sit in a wheelchair and wrote a book about his experience. he was positive untill the end. The metallica number one and this film is for me a memory that always will be sad and happy for the extra time i had with him.

I used to suffer from sleep paralysis nearly every time I woke up for years. I was completely locked in, and I would just start crying from terror once I finally came out of it and "woke up". It was frightening, and I still feel traumatized by it when it lasted just a few minutes a day. I cannot imagine any greater horror than that being my entire existence.

I'm 69. I experienced what you had, Adam, only once, about 3 years ago. It probably only lasted a few seconds but it seemed so much longer. Long enough for me recall this movie, which I saw only once when I was 21. Long enough, too, to think about how it would feel if this inability to move was for the rest of my life. I was so scared. I saw this film the year it came out. I was a senior in high school, facing the prospect of being drafted and sent to Viet Nam. By this point, even my WWII veteran father was in great doubt as to the why the U.S. was continuing in an obviously un-winnable war. I was fortunate that they changed the draft system to a lottery one, and I lucked out on not having to go. Nevertheless, this film (thanks to a high school English teacher) was recommended, and I went to see it (and read the book before hand), and it, more than anything else up to that point, radicalized my opposition to the war as nothing else could! This film (and the book) changed me forever. I could never see our country in quite the same way I had prior. The film (and book) then, in 1971, and now, 2018, has lost none of the power and truthful disturbance as I felt then. Too bad it's not more generally available and viewed. Thanks for posting here!

This movie should be mandatory in school history classes. This movie is tragically under appreciated and it still holds up today and even overshadows alot of big blockbusters we have today. It's a dark, brutal truth that war is hell, but hell can go much deeper than war.

This has to be one of the most psychologically draining story premises of all time. It addresses some key warfare issues that have been proverbial "hot potatoes" since mankind first engaged in modern combat. While it goes without being said, I think the Metallica music video for "One" really sums up the emotional agony of this young man's state of being. Such a tragic story...and all too real for many viewers to handle. It really hits hard if you let it sink in!

Spent 6 years enduring multiple intestinal surgeries and subsequent complications before finally escaping that personal hell in 2008. Up to 9 months at a time on feeding tubes, mind altering sedation, and a post operative coma to name a few. Trumbo's novel was published in 1939, Ellison's story was first published in '67. The film came out 5 years later. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the novel inspired the tone and themes of the story, which in turn drove production of the film. (side note - kudos for the Ellison reference. He's grossly under-appreciated and this generation will suffer for not knowing his work).

Thank you for uploading this. I remember first seeing parts of this in the Metallica video, feeling upset & disturbed; but it was my father who recognized and explained the movie itself to me. He was drafted during Vietnam and remembered the intensity of this anti-war movie, being a young man forced into "war". Brilliantly done film, I think we also need to recognize soldiers who have come home whose minds have been broken from the trauma they have experienced & witnessed, even if their bodies appear intact. I agree with other comments - everyone should see this film.

My mother saw this in the theater when it first came out. I'll never forget how she described it: everyone was completely silent at the conclusion of the movie, then they filed out of the room, every head bowed.

This movie is based off a horrifying true story about a Canadian soldier in WW1 by the name of Joe Bonham, he miraculously survived a mortar shell right next to him that blew off all of his limbs and most of his face. Ofc getting your limbs blown off happened to millions of soldiers during WW1 and WW2 but Joe's case was one of the most severe/memorable cases

This is one of the most amazing, deep thinking and sad movies I have ever seen. I think everyone should see this. I wish knowing that this is possible would stop all war. But this place he is in is brought on by accident, drug OD, Alcoholic anoxia, coma. At first I wondered what would I do if that were me. But then I realized I wouldn’t even be able to use Morris code.
And nurses like this one are few and far between.
I find this movie so painful. Knowing he is trapped with no hope of help. At the mercy of the idiots around him.
I wonder if years of no communication, just living in your own head would drive an individual to insanity?

I love in the beginning it shows the world leaders at the time in their colors, their glory, and their armies in formation, then you see this man lose everything. Tells you how war is just kings and generals sending men to kill and to die for their game.

This is my 3rd time watching this masterpiece and it is easily one of the best yet most horrifying movies I have yet to see, the dreams where John talks to Christ are amazing, I have a hard time deciding whether or not he is really talking to Christ or just imagining it like where he is placed into the fair under the command of his father.

This is one of the most impactful and touching films ever made. A story of the atrocities of war, mans struggle to know God, passion, pain, and the indomitable human spirit. It touches on the baseline of the most horrific and saddening aspects of what we know as "life", while also bringing into focus the beauty that surrounds us every day, that most of us take advantage of. It's truly one of the best (if not THE best) films ever made. It should be watched at least once by everyone, like required reading in college. If you come away from THIS one with your heart not touched,, then you don't HAVE a heart! My hats off to the film makers, the actors, and to whomever it was that had the splendid idea to load it onto YouTube! 🇺🇸 Thank you for sharing!!

Took me about 30 years to finally watch this movie. The video for “One” made me aware of its existence but I never got around to watching until tonight. I’m left shaken and terrified. To think this could be the reality for some poor souls that fell to injury or illness is too horrifying to even consider.

This is the kind of story that needs to be told every generation. As we grow in technology and military might, the story of Johnny is more possible with each passing day. How many K.I.A soldiers are laying in a military hospital somewhere. Hidden in a dark basement. Living death. Families told their brother, their father, their son, their mother, their daughter, their husband and wife are gone. Here's a flag. No body to bury. With man's capacity for knowledge through evil is beyond capacity. With all the possibilities in our world, the number is most definitely not zero. Johnny the character maybe fiction, but his story is real. I can guarantee that much.

my stepdad was a marine. i don’t know what he experienced nor does anybody else. including my mother. metallica has always been his get away, how he gets whatever he’s holding back out, after watching the music video “one” when i was legit like 3/4, very intrigued but partly traumatized i began getting closer to him. finally i decided to watch the video again and there i was, recommended to watch this movie which was in the video.

This is in my Top 5 horror movies. You can call it drama, anti-war, but to me, it is PURE HORROR.

He literally had no mouth, and could not scream, and the scene where Jesus finds himself at a loss is definitely one of the scariest, bleakest scenes I've ever seen in a film.

The best thing Metallica ever did was relinquish the rights, we were almost denied this movie by total accident.

Read the book by Dalton Trumbo, it is even more powerful than the movie. And one of the best anti-war books. I read it decades ago, it is unforgettable and Johnny's message is there is nothing better than peace on earth.

Just got through watching this movie......WOW! I think it gives more of a good glimpse of how much hell a person can go through. If I was that nurse, I would've gone ahead and cut his breathing tube just to put him out of his misery. It wouldn't be murder, it would be a mercy killing. Nobody should ever go through that. It took me several time's watching this to really understand it. The second time I realized 😳 that the general did know that Johnny could feel and think. His sick twisted mind keeping this man alive for his twisted, selfish science experiment. I also hadn't realized that he had been in this hospital for many many years as the general is much older at the end. This is truly the saddest movie I think I've ever seen 😢 💔 😪 it's just like the government to do this kind of sick shit 😞

I read the book in 1972 when I was a teenager. Then I saw this movie. I just watched it again after almost 48 years and I am as disturbed as I was then. My grandparents lived at the time outside of Ottawa and deep in the woods was this grey stone building, completely fenced off and abandoned. It had been a hospital for soldiers so disfigured in WWI that they were kept there so as not to upset the 'ordinary' citizens. It haunts me to this day. I can't finish watching this movie now.

I live in Russia and I have first heard about this movie in 2022. And as you all know, Russia assaulted Ukraine in the beginning of that year. And in the May of 2022 I watched that movie. And it’s hard to explain the impact it has left on me. It was so realistically horrifying while showing the regular soldier’s suffering, just a person who was fooled by his own government to be sent to meaningless war (to the USA).
It was not nothing like sadness, I didn’t want to cry. It was something much deeper.
Amazing film. “If we won’t end, war will end us”.
