Seven Acts of Mercy
Jools Holland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Water for the thirsty
The hungry are fed
Clothe the naked
Bury the dead
Harbour the stranger
Visit those in need
Minister to the prisoner
There is no greater deed

(Chorus)
Seven acts of mercy
Six are not enough
Seven ways to show you care for everyone you love
Seven times as stronger
Every second of the day
But if there's one thing to remember
Show some mercy everyday

Can you give to a taker?
Can you take what you give?
Can you love someone who hates you?
And forget and forgive?
Charity's outdated
Replaced by lust and greed
Break out the tides are sailing
We always take more than we need

(Repeat chorus)

If there's one thing to remember
Show me some mercy everyday!

Overall Meaning

In Jools Holland's song Seven Acts of Mercy, he sings about seven deeds that can make a difference in people's lives. The lyrics are straightforward and universal, emphasizing the importance of showing compassion and kindness to our fellow human beings. The seven acts of mercy are watering the thirsty, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, burying the dead, welcoming the stranger, visiting those in need, and ministering to the prisoner. By doing these seven things, we can make the world a better place and show that there is no greater deed than showing mercy.

The chorus of the song reinforces the message that we should all try to show mercy every day. It suggests that showing mercy is seven times stronger than not showing mercy and that by doing so, we can care for everyone we love. The song highlights the fact that charity and compassion are often replaced by lust and greed in our modern society. The lyrics ask us to question whether we can give to a taker or love someone who hates us. They suggest that we should forget and forgive, as this is an essential part of showing mercy.

Overall, Jools Holland's song is a powerful reminder of our obligation to show compassion and kindness towards others. It emphasizes the importance of doing the seven acts of mercy and encourages us to show mercy every day, even in small ways. I think the answer lies in her comment during the interview where she said on releasing her album as an independendent

"To compete with with the record companies you need a lot of money which I didn't have at that time"

All I can say to that is whoever had her as an artist under their umbrella and didn't back her in the way she deserved at the time SHAME ON YOU as you ROBBED US OF ONE OF THE GREATEST MUSICAL TALENT IN HISTORY!!!

Still now I can only IMAGINE what she could and should have achieved with PROPER backing...

Should have AT LEAST a JAMES BOND to her name as the is NO ONE CAME CLOSE to what she did the way she did it......

Can someone explain me why this extremely talented woman with a huge voice did not get the recognition she deserved?

80s Music

Because the singles she released were not very good. While there are all sorts of variables that determine what is released, if the songs are not strong enough they do not sell. Simple.

Daniel Esteve

Easy. In a world where only mediocre people triumphs like Rihanna, JLo, Shakira, Lady Shit... There's no place for authentically talented people like us
