The Can Is Open
Jools Holland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And now that the can is open
I can truly speak my mind
It's been working up til this fight
You know I'm not the lying kind

Let your secrets be mine tonight

Trust in your eyes to where they first met with mine
I'd be the person you'd fine

Oooooooh ooooooooh

Can't believe you didn't know it
Can't belive I didn't show it
Can't belive I didn't know it
I can't belive you didn't show it

All my secrets are out tonight

Trace all your steps to where they first cross with mine
Keep all the treasure you find
Trace all your steps to where they first cross with mine
I'd be the person you'd find

Oooooooh oooooooh

Overall Meaning

In Jools Holland's song Can Is Open, the singer finally has the opportunity to speak their mind after keeping their true feelings hidden. The can being open symbolizes a release of emotions and honesty. The singer admits to previously holding back and not wanting to lie about their feelings, but now that they have the chance to speak openly, they declare that they will keep their partner's secrets. The lyrics express a desire for a deep connection and the willingness to be vulnerable.

The second half of the song continues with the theme of honesty and connection. The singer can't believe that either they didn't know how they felt or that their partner didn't show their true feelings. All secrets are out tonight, implying that the relationship will now be built on open communication. The singer asks their partner to trace their steps to where they first met with their loved one, and that they would be there waiting for them. This further emphasizes the desire for a strong, deep connection.

Gerald Berliner

To this day i will never understand why this man has never appeared on the Rolling Stone top 100 guitarists list. A prodigious player who has never been given the guitarist accolades he so rightfully deserves. He could play so many of those punks on that list under the table ten times over.

John Bloodworth

Gerald Berliner true and so talented. My understanding is mike did all of everything on the original tubular bells album.

Nick Bulcock

@John Bloodworth And, mostly, in one take.

Gerhard Van der Westhuizen

Incredible amount of concentration. His playing is so passionate. So incredibly focused and "in the zone". Tour de force indeed.

Bob Carlson

the original Tubular bells is also done in a 7-8 count it tricks the brain into listening and not drifting off, Kinda like the film industry flashing frames of pop corn in the movie that could not be seen by eye ,later banned buy film industry . It is a very hard complicated way to play only the most dedicated of musicians can play this count
