Peace In The Valley
Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra & Ruby Turner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh well, I'm tired and so weary
But I must go alone
Till the lord comes and calls, calls me away, oh yes
Well the morning's so bright
And the lamp is alight
And the night, night is as black as the sea, oh yes

There will be peace in the valley for me, some day
There will be peace in the valley for me, oh Lord I pray
There'll be no sadness, no sorrow
No trouble, trouble I see
There will be peace in the valley for me, for me

Well the bear will be gentle
And the wolves will be tame
And the lion shall lay down by the lamb, oh yes
And the beasts from the wild
Shall be lit by a child
And I'll be changed, changed from this creature that I am, oh yes

There will be peace in the valley for me, some day
There will be peace in the valley for me, oh Lord I pray
There'll be no sadness, no sorrow

No trouble, trouble I see
There will be peace in the valley for me, for me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Peace in the Valley" by Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra & Ruby Turner depict a longing for a place of peace and rest, where there is no sadness, sorrow, or trouble. The singer is tired and weary, but they look forward to the day when they will be called away to a better place by the Lord. The morning is bright and the lamp is alight, yet the night is as black as the sea, suggesting a sense of foreboding and uncertainty.

The second stanza paints a picture of a world in which even the fiercest animals are peaceful and gentle, with the bear and the wolves being tame, and the lion lying down with the lamb. The wild beasts are lit by a child, perhaps symbolizing the innocence and purity of a new world order. The singer acknowledges that they will be changed from the creature they currently are, implying a sense of transformation and renewal.

I saw Ruby with Jools last Saturday and I don’t think I have ever seen a singer (of any genre) put so much self-investment into a performance ever. She completely owned the Symphony Hall in Birmingham. Incredible performance.
