Seventh Son
Jools Holland And Sting Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everybody's talking 'bout a seventh son
In the whole round world there's only one

I'm the one
Yes, I'm the one
I'm the one, I'm the one
The one they call the seventh son
I can tell your future, it will come to pass
I can do things for you; make your heart feel glad
Look in the sky, predict the rain
I can tell when a woman's got another man

I'm the one
Yes, I'm the one
I'm the one, I'm the one
The one they call the seventh son

I can hold you close, I can squeeze you tight
Make you cry for me both day and night
Heal the sick and raise the dead
Make little girls talk out of their heads

I'm the one
Yes, I'm the one
I'm the one, I'm the one
The one they call the seventh son

I can talk these words that sound so sweet
Even make your little heart skip a beat
I can heal the sick and raise the dead
Make little girls talk out of their heads

I'm the one
Yes, I'm the one
I'm the one, I'm the one
The one they call the seventh son

I'm the one x 6
The one they call the seventh son
I'm the one
I'm the one
The one they call the seventh son

Overall Meaning

The song "Seventh Son" is a blues rock classic that celebrates a mythical figure of American folklore - the seventh son of a seventh son, believed to possess supernatural powers such as clairvoyance, healing or ability to talk with animals. The song opens with a catchy refrain that echoes the pervasive grip that the "seventh son" notion holds over popular imagination, with everybody talking about him, yet only one person possessing that magical quality. The song's narrator claims to be that elusive character, and proceeds to list his remarkable abilities - the power to predict the future, to make people happy and sad, to know when it will rain, and to detect infidelity. His boasts escalate into borderline absurdity as he claims to be able to hold people tight, heal the sick, raise the dead, and even make little girls talk out of their heads. The repeated refrain of "I'm the one, yes, I'm the one" adds to the song's hypnotic and syncopated rhythm, while the call-and-response between the singer and the backup chorus adds to the song's jubilant and bombastic energy.

On one level, the song can be seen as a tongue-in-cheek celebration of African American tradition of claiming special powers and talents, such as those of the conjure-man or the root-doctor. By proclaiming himself the seventh son, the singer aligns himself with a long line of folk heroes who have used their perceived powers to gain respect and status in their community. However, the song can also be seen as a comment on the power of myth and the allure of the unknown. By tapping into the age-old belief that the seventh son has supernatural abilities, the song taps into a universal longing for something beyond the mundane, and celebrates the possibility of magic and wonder.

Sting and Jools Holland are both signature great on any song they put their hands on. Considering that it's already a classic rock song, how could this not be fantastic?

Sting could sing the Yellow Pages and still sound magnificent. Great performance.

A long story relating to this song:
so, one of the main villains of my favourite show, kamen rider geats, i nicknamed 'future jools holland' because they look a little alike and i have been unable to unsee it. i put him to this, and it works perfectly, i genuinely don't know why
