He is one of the major figures in the field of early music since the 1970s, largely responsible for bringing the viol (viola da gamba) back to life on the stage. His repertory ranges from Medieval to Renaissance and Baroque music.
Savall's musical training started in the school choir of his native town (1947-55). He later completed his training at the Barcelona Conservatory of Music (1959-65). Afterward, he began his specialisation in early music at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland (1968-70).
In 1974 he formed the ensemble Hespèrion XX (since 2000 as Hespèrion XXI), together with the soprano Montserrat Figueras (his wife), Lorenzo Alpert and Hopkinson Smith. Hespèrion XX favored a style of interpretation characterised by great musical vitality and at the same time, maximum historical accuracy.
In 1987 he returned to Barcelona to found La Capella Reial de Catalunya, a vocal ensemble devoted to the interpretation of music prior to the 18th century.
Finally, in 1989 Savall created Le Concert des Nations, an orchestra that is generally dedicated to the baroque repertoire, but which sometimes also serves as an outlet for music that hails from the classical/romantic repertoire (e.g. Sinfonia a Gran Orquesta by Juan Crisótomo de Arriga).
Savall's discography includes more than 140 recordings. Since 1998 he has released his records with his own label, Alia Vox.
Jordi Savall is also a two-time Grammy nominee, who scored the 1991 Alain Corneau film, Tous les matins du monde (also awarded the César of the French film industry in 1992). The soundtrack, re-released on his own Alia Vox label, has sold more than a million copies worldwide.

I listen this piece very often - on the LA freeways it is a really calming shot -
A couple of thoughts, though:
* Tempo: nobody knows what was the tempo in which this type of music was played during Mr. Marais' times (early 1700-s) - anything is just approximation, and this is done within a quite wide range (the range in this piece's renderings going up to more than 2 minutes) -
So, you can get slower takes, or faster takes - I think that this version is a sprightlier one (compared with the previous one on UTube list, which is much slower (and done on period instruments also, I think) -
Some trivia about tempo in the music of that period - Marais was close to Lully (an Italian) who used to work in Paris for the king at that time, and who was the one (I hope I am not mistaken), who came with the idea of a "baton master", a fellow who used to stand in the front of the orchestra who, by pumping up & down a baton, would gave the players the visual, unifying cues of the parts in the larger musical ensemble -
* to further this Marais/Lully issue, there is the marvelous French period movie, "La Meilleure Du Monde" (a 1990-s production), which deals exactly with Mr. Marais' career as a Paris Court musician in that period - the movie is easy to get, and it is worth any effort -
The Academy dolts of course passed it - but it was a joy, and it is a joy, compared with the ponderous humanistic crap the Academy keeps honoring -
* and a trivia question for the eventual readers of this post: did Marin Marais indeed spy from a tree maestro Lully practicing in his garden to get a glimpse of his famous digitation tricks?
And did mister Marais pitifully fell from the tree during one of his snooping excursions?
Hint: remember, mister Marais eventually married mister Lully's daughter -

Né le 1er août 1941 à Igualada (Province de Barcelone, Catalogne), est un musicien espagnol, violiste, violoncelliste, chef de chœur et chef d'orchestre, dont le répertoire s'étend de la musique médiévale à celle du xixe siècle en passant par la musique de la Renaissance et baroque. Marié à la soprano espagnole Montserrat Figueras de 1968 jusqu'à la mort de cette dernière en 2011, il est le père d'Arianna et Ferran Savall, tous deux chanteurs et musiciens.

Baptisé à Paris le 31 mai 1656, date possible mais non certaine de sa naissance (le 31 mai est donné pour sa date de naissance par Évrard Titon du Tillet1) et mort le 15 août 1728 à Paris également est un violiste ou gambiste et compositeur français de la période baroque.
