His characteristic style fuses rock and roll, samba, bossa nova, jazz, maracatu, funk, ska and even hip hop, with lyrics that mix humor and satire, as well as themes esoteric. Jorge's work has a unique importance for Brazilian music, as it incorporates new elements in swing and guitar playing, with characteristics of North American rock, soul and funk. Furthermore, he brought Arab and African influences, coming from his mother, born in Ethiopia.
He influenced sambalanço and samba-rock and was covered and honored by countless exponents of the new generations of Brazilian music, such as Mundo Livre S/A, Os Paralamas do Sucesso, Skank, Fernanda Abreu, Racionais MC's and Belô Velloso. Jorge Ben Jor exploded with the song "Mas, Que Nada!" and, soon after, ratified his talent with another great hit, "Chove Chuva". Two songs that were neither bossa nova nor samba. Purists thought his music was too modern. It was difficult for musicians at the time to follow him, so much so that his first albums were recorded with a group that played samba jazz at Beco das Garrafas, Meirelles e os Copa 5, led by saxophonist J. T. Meirelles.

Do outro lado o imenso cafezal
Ao centro senhores sentados
Vendo a colheita do algodão branco
Sendo colhidos por mãos negras
Eu quero ver quando Zumbi chegar
Eu quero ver eu quero ver o que vai acontecer
Zumbi é senhor das guerras
Angola gongô benguela
Monjolo capinda nina

Zumbi é senhor das guerras Zumbi senhor das demandas
The lyrics to Jorge Ben's song "África Brasil" are a call for revolution and resistance against the oppression of Afro-Brazilian people. The repeated phrase "Eu quero ver o que vai acontecer quando Zumbi chegar," which means "I want to see what will happen when Zumbi arrives," refers to Zumbi dos Palmares, a legendary figure in Brazilian history who led a community of escaped slaves in the 17th century. Zumbi is celebrated in Brazil as a symbol of resistance against slavery and colonialism.
The lyrics also highlight the brutal realities of slavery in Brazil, with references to the slave trade and the exploitation of black labor in the sugar, coffee, and cotton industries. The lines "Ao centro senhores sentados/Vendo a colheita do algodão branco/Sendo colhidos por mãos negras" (In the center, seated masters / Watching the white cotton harvest / Being collected by black hands) describe the stark contrast between the wealthy white landowners and the enslaved black laborers who worked tirelessly to produce valuable crops.
Overall, "África Brasil" is a powerful expression of the struggle for freedom and equality in Brazil, drawing on the history and culture of Afro-Brazilian people to create a call for change.
