His characteristic style fuses rock and roll, samba, bossa nova, jazz, maracatu, funk, ska and even hip hop, with lyrics that mix humor and satire, as well as themes esoteric. Jorge's work has a unique importance for Brazilian music, as it incorporates new elements in swing and guitar playing, with characteristics of North American rock, soul and funk. Furthermore, he brought Arab and African influences, coming from his mother, born in Ethiopia.
He influenced sambalanço and samba-rock and was covered and honored by countless exponents of the new generations of Brazilian music, such as Mundo Livre S/A, Os Paralamas do Sucesso, Skank, Fernanda Abreu, Racionais MC's and Belô Velloso. Jorge Ben Jor exploded with the song "Mas, Que Nada!" and, soon after, ratified his talent with another great hit, "Chove Chuva". Two songs that were neither bossa nova nor samba. Purists thought his music was too modern. It was difficult for musicians at the time to follow him, so much so that his first albums were recorded with a group that played samba jazz at Beco das Garrafas, Meirelles e os Copa 5, led by saxophonist J. T. Meirelles.

Subir, descer, entrar, sair
O mago mandou avisar
Água de beber, água de benzer
Água de banhar

The lyrics of Jorge Ben's song "Alcohol" are complex and cryptic, weaving together themes of nature, identity, and language. The opening lines refer to a magician or wizard who sends a message: instead of alcohol, we should be drinking water for its purifying properties. The repetition of the phrase "água de beber, água de benzer, água de banhar" emphasizes the importance of water in multiple contexts.
The chorus, "Alcohol só para desinfetar," suggests that alcohol has a negative connotation, associated only with disinfecting rather than with pleasure or enjoyment. This sets up a contrast with the verses, which explore a range of symbols and elements from nature: the sky, sun, moon, rain, and sea. These natural symbols are associated with different materials, such as "água marinha," "ouro," and "esmeralda." The mention of São Jorge, a popular figure in Brazilian and African folklore and religion who is often depicted on horseback, adds another layer of meaning.
The following verse shifts the focus to language and communication, with the image of a "lingua atômica" or atomic tongue that cannot be stopped by even the most advanced technology. The verse also introduces the idea of identity, with the pursuit of a "nova identidade" or new identity, perhaps in response to the changing social and political landscape. The final verse brings the focus back to personal relationships, with a plea for a kiss and a declaration of love.
Overall, the song seems to be grappling with a range of themes, from the natural world to identity to language and communication, all connected by a thread of personal relationships and desire.
