His characteristic style fuses rock and roll, samba, bossa nova, jazz, maracatu, funk, ska and even hip hop, with lyrics that mix humor and satire, as well as themes esoteric. Jorge's work has a unique importance for Brazilian music, as it incorporates new elements in swing and guitar playing, with characteristics of North American rock, soul and funk. Furthermore, he brought Arab and African influences, coming from his mother, born in Ethiopia.
He influenced sambalanço and samba-rock and was covered and honored by countless exponents of the new generations of Brazilian music, such as Mundo Livre S/A, Os Paralamas do Sucesso, Skank, Fernanda Abreu, Racionais MC's and Belô Velloso. Jorge Ben Jor exploded with the song "Mas, Que Nada!" and, soon after, ratified his talent with another great hit, "Chove Chuva". Two songs that were neither bossa nova nor samba. Purists thought his music was too modern. It was difficult for musicians at the time to follow him, so much so that his first albums were recorded with a group that played samba jazz at Beco das Garrafas, Meirelles e os Copa 5, led by saxophonist J. T. Meirelles.
Amor de Carnaval
Jorge Ben Lyrics

Ela é minha dor
Ela é meu pensamento
Ela é meu amor
Eu chorei quando acabou o carnaval, chorei
Pois eu sou muito sentimental
Amor de carnaval é fantasia
Mas ela é minha alegria
Ela é minha dor
Ela é meu pensamento
Ela é meu amor
Mas eu sei perder e sei ganhar
Esperarei até o outro carnaval chegar
Para de novo com ela ir brincar
Tentando novamente seu amor conquistar
E se não der certo
Novamente eu vou chorar
Silêncio no Brooklin
Eu disse - Calma no Brooklin
Alegria no Caiçara!!!
The lyrics to Jorge Ben's song Amor de Carnaval describe a love that is both joyful and painful, occupying the singer's thoughts and heart. The song begins with the declaration that she is his joy and his pain, his every thought and his love. The chorus reinforces this sentiment, as he repeats that she is everything to him. The first verse describes the sadness the singer feels when carnival ends, as he is an emotional person who feels deeply. The second verse explains that carnival love is fleeting and temporary, lasting only two days. Nevertheless, the singer is willing to wait until next year's carnival to try again with his love interest, even if it means he may once again end up heartbroken.
