His characteristic style fuses rock and roll, samba, bossa nova, jazz, maracatu, funk, ska and even hip hop, with lyrics that mix humor and satire, as well as themes esoteric. Jorge's work has a unique importance for Brazilian music, as it incorporates new elements in swing and guitar playing, with characteristics of North American rock, soul and funk. Furthermore, he brought Arab and African influences, coming from his mother, born in Ethiopia.
He influenced sambalanço and samba-rock and was covered and honored by countless exponents of the new generations of Brazilian music, such as Mundo Livre S/A, Os Paralamas do Sucesso, Skank, Fernanda Abreu, Racionais MC's and Belô Velloso. Jorge Ben Jor exploded with the song "Mas, Que Nada!" and, soon after, ratified his talent with another great hit, "Chove Chuva". Two songs that were neither bossa nova nor samba. Purists thought his music was too modern. It was difficult for musicians at the time to follow him, so much so that his first albums were recorded with a group that played samba jazz at Beco das Garrafas, Meirelles e os Copa 5, led by saxophonist J. T. Meirelles.

Cabeluda, descabela
Cabelo, cabeleira
Cabeluda, descabelada
Quem disse que cabelo não sente
Quem disse que cabelo
Não gosta de pente
Cabelo embaraçado é vento
Cabelo vem lá de dentro
Cabelo é como pensamento
Quem pensa que cabelo é mato
Quem pensa que cabelo é pasto
Cabelo com orgulho é crina
Cilindros de espessura fina
Cabelo quer ficar prá cima
Laque, fixador, gomalina
Cabelo, cabeleira
Cabeluda, descabelada
Cabelo, cabeleira
Cabeluda, descabelada
Quem quer a força de Sansão
Quem quer a juba de leão
Cabelo pode ser cortado
Cabelo pode ser comprido
Cabelo pode ser trançado
Cabelo pode ser tingido
Aparado ou escovado
Descolorido, descabelado
Cabelo pode ser bonito
Cruzado, seco ou molhado
The song "Cabelo" by Jorge Ben is an ode to hair and its versatility. The repeating lyrics talk about hair in various states - long, tangled, proud, fine, and so on. The song begins with the declaration that hair has feelings, contrary to the popular belief that it is just dead cells. The singer then goes on to compare hair to thoughts that come from within. The tone of the song is playful and celebratory, as the singer praises the many ways in which hair can be styled, cut, or colored.
The lyrics of "Cabelo" are fascinating in their use of metaphor and wordplay. The song features a lot of rhyming words in Portuguese that add to its catchiness. The verses also contain oppositions like "cabelo" vs. "pente" (hair vs. comb), "cresce" vs. "embaracado" (growing vs. tangled), and "orgulho" vs. "mato" (pride vs. weed). The singer makes use of personification when he claims that hair can "want to stay up" and need "hair spray, fixing gel, and pomade." The song's message seems to be that hair is something to be enjoyed and experimented with, rather than restrained and tamed.
