His characteristic style fuses rock and roll, samba, bossa nova, jazz, maracatu, funk, ska and even hip hop, with lyrics that mix humor and satire, as well as themes esoteric. Jorge's work has a unique importance for Brazilian music, as it incorporates new elements in swing and guitar playing, with characteristics of North American rock, soul and funk. Furthermore, he brought Arab and African influences, coming from his mother, born in Ethiopia.
He influenced sambalanço and samba-rock and was covered and honored by countless exponents of the new generations of Brazilian music, such as Mundo Livre S/A, Os Paralamas do Sucesso, Skank, Fernanda Abreu, Racionais MC's and Belô Velloso. Jorge Ben Jor exploded with the song "Mas, Que Nada!" and, soon after, ratified his talent with another great hit, "Chove Chuva". Two songs that were neither bossa nova nor samba. Purists thought his music was too modern. It was difficult for musicians at the time to follow him, so much so that his first albums were recorded with a group that played samba jazz at Beco das Garrafas, Meirelles e os Copa 5, led by saxophonist J. T. Meirelles.

O dia acaba na tarde
A tarde acaba na noite
A noite acaba na madrugada
Na madrugada eu me acabo
Chorando morrendo,
Morrendo de amor por você
Pois você é minha hei hei
Hei hei Domingas
Meu anjo minha luz
Meu mar de rosas
Domingas minha companheira
Domingas minha namorada
Você não é Ave Maria
Mas é cheia de graça
Que maravilha pois
Você é minha hei hei
Só minha hei hei Domingas
Hei hei Domingas hei hei
Meu doce amor Domingas
Minha espera
O meu caminho
Minha inspiração
A minha primavera
Só minha hei hei Domingas
Hei hei Domingas hei hei
Domingas, Domingas, Domingas
Eu te amo eu te adoro
Minha vida meu viver
Eu dou a lua, eu dou o sol
Eu dou a terra, eu dou
O mar, é só você querer
Que maravilha
Domingas, Domingas.
The lyrics of Jorge Ben's song Domingas speak about a person's never-ending love for someone named Domingas. The lyrics use different aspects of time as metaphors for the stages of love. The song begins with the line "The week ends on Sunday", which sets the tone for the entire song. Sunday usually marks the end of the week, and it symbolically represents the ending of something significant. Then, he talks about how the day ends in the afternoon, and the afternoon ends in the night. This is a reflection of how love can have different stages, and it's not always smooth sailing.
The chorus of the song mentions that Domingas is the singer's "hei hei," which translates to her being his one and only. The singer mentions that Domingas is his angel, and she's full of grace. He adds that although she's not "Ave Maria," she's still special in her way. The lyrics of the song portray a lover who's deeply in love with Domingas and who's willing to give her everything he has. He concludes the song professing his love for her and telling her that she means everything to him.
