His characteristic style fuses rock and roll, samba, bossa nova, jazz, maracatu, funk, ska and even hip hop, with lyrics that mix humor and satire, as well as themes esoteric. Jorge's work has a unique importance for Brazilian music, as it incorporates new elements in swing and guitar playing, with characteristics of North American rock, soul and funk. Furthermore, he brought Arab and African influences, coming from his mother, born in Ethiopia.
He influenced sambalanço and samba-rock and was covered and honored by countless exponents of the new generations of Brazilian music, such as Mundo Livre S/A, Os Paralamas do Sucesso, Skank, Fernanda Abreu, Racionais MC's and Belô Velloso. Jorge Ben Jor exploded with the song "Mas, Que Nada!" and, soon after, ratified his talent with another great hit, "Chove Chuva". Two songs that were neither bossa nova nor samba. Purists thought his music was too modern. It was difficult for musicians at the time to follow him, so much so that his first albums were recorded with a group that played samba jazz at Beco das Garrafas, Meirelles e os Copa 5, led by saxophonist J. T. Meirelles.

La, la, la, la, la, la
Coloque o teu grisol sob a luz polarizada
Ó meu filho
Lava as escórias com a água pré destilada
Pois aquele que foge à falsa prata
E ao falso ouro
Não merece a simpatia de ninguém
Está ávido a ser malévolo
Não merece a simpatia de ninguém
La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
Domine a imagem use força inferior superior
Use o conhecimento com perseverança e consciência
Pratique transmute a vontade com lealdade
E sinceridade
Seja atento e assíduo porque
A qualquer hora a qualquer momento
Pode estar nascendo o amor
La, la, la, la, la, la
La, la, la, la, la, la
Coloque o teu grisol
Coloque o teu grisol...
The song "Luz Polarizada" by Jorge Ben is a combination of spiritual and practical advice. The lyrics encourage the listener to seek honesty and purity in their actions and thoughts. The first verse advises to place one's "grisol" (a type of weight used to calibrate scales) under polarized light to better see any imperfections, suggesting the importance of examining oneself and improving where needed. The use of pre-distilled water to cleanse these imperfections further underscores the importance of purity and integrity.
The second verse advises the listener to use their willpower and knowledge with perseverance and consciousness to achieve their goals, while also cautioning against maliciousness and lack of loyalty. The final verse encourages the listener to remain attentive and diligent, as love could arise at any moment.
Overall, the song offers practical advice for self-improvement while emphasizing the importance of honesty, integrity, and positivity.
