His characteristic style fuses rock and roll, samba, bossa nova, jazz, maracatu, funk, ska and even hip hop, with lyrics that mix humor and satire, as well as themes esoteric. Jorge's work has a unique importance for Brazilian music, as it incorporates new elements in swing and guitar playing, with characteristics of North American rock, soul and funk. Furthermore, he brought Arab and African influences, coming from his mother, born in Ethiopia.
He influenced sambalanço and samba-rock and was covered and honored by countless exponents of the new generations of Brazilian music, such as Mundo Livre S/A, Os Paralamas do Sucesso, Skank, Fernanda Abreu, Racionais MC's and Belô Velloso. Jorge Ben Jor exploded with the song "Mas, Que Nada!" and, soon after, ratified his talent with another great hit, "Chove Chuva". Two songs that were neither bossa nova nor samba. Purists thought his music was too modern. It was difficult for musicians at the time to follow him, so much so that his first albums were recorded with a group that played samba jazz at Beco das Garrafas, Meirelles e os Copa 5, led by saxophonist J. T. Meirelles.

Longe dos fios elétricos
Eu vou soltar a minha pipa, eu vou
Eu vou soltar a minha pipa, eu vou
Olha a pipa, voando no céu
Olha a pipa, voando no céu
É de bambu, é de papel, ela é de linha de carretel
Pipa,
Papagaio,
Barrilete,
Pandorga
Pipa,
Papagaio,
Barrilete,
Pandorga
Quem quer cruzar, quem quer cruzar, quem quer cruzar?
Tem gilete no rabo, tem gilete no rabo, tem gilete no rabo
Olha a pipa, voando no céu
Olha a pipa, voando no céu
É de bambu, é de papel, ela é de linha de carretel
Olha a pipa

Ta com medo tabaréu?
É de linda de carretel.

The lyrics of Jorge Ben's song "Olha a Pipa" talks about the simple joy of flying kites. The song is a celebration of a childhood pastime that is still enjoyed by many. Ben sings about going to a green field far away from electrical wires to fly his kite. He shares his excitement by repeating "Eu vou soltar a minha pipa, eu vou" (I'm going to fly my kite, I am) several times.
The chorus of the song is an invitation to look up into the sky and see the kite flying. Ben describes how the kite is made of bamboo, paper, and a reel of thread. He also mentions different words that are used to describe a kite, such as "papagaio" (parrot), "barrilete" (barrel), and "pandorga."
In the following verses, Ben describes the different colors and types of paper used to make kites. He also mentions the type of string he uses, which is called "Rococó" and has "cerol" (ground glass) and "goma-arábica" (gum arabic). He warns that there are "giletes" (razor blades) attached to the kite string to cut other flyers' strings.
"Olha a Pipa" is a fun and upbeat song that showcases the simple pleasure of flying kites. It captures the essence of a pastime that is enjoyed by people of all ages, and its joyful lyrics make it a timeless song that has been enjoyed for decades.
