The staff calmed me down, saying they had everything under control.

They explained that they were trained to take care of their clients' needs.

You can check out any time you like
I was told that I could leave the hotel whenever I desired.

But you can never leave!
However, there were implications that I would forever remain within the hotel and its surroundings.
