He comes from a Jewish family that fled persecution in Germany. He studied to become an otolaryngologyst (i.e., ear, throat, and nose doctor) like his parents but ultimately chose to pursue his passion for music.
Drexler made his full-length album debut with La Luz Que Sabe Robar (1992), followed by Radar (1994). In hopes of furthering his career, he went to Spain in 1995 upon the invitation of legendary singer/songwriter Joaquín Sabina , who showed him around the Madrid music scene and helped him secure an international recording contract. So impressed with Madrid that he chose to make his permanent residency there, Drexler got together with a band of Spanish musicians to re-record material from his first two albums along with new material and release it internationally as Vaivén (1996), the first of four albums on Virgin España. The highlights of Vaivén along with those of its three follow-ups, Llueve (1998), Frontera (1999), and Sea (2001), were later compiled on the best-of compilation La Edad Del Cielo (2004).
Upon his switch to the Dro Atlántic label, Drexler's career reached new heights of success with the critically acclaimed Eco (2004). Most notably, the album includes the Oscar-winning song ''Al Otro Lado Del Río'', which was prominently featured during the closing credits of the Walter Salles film The Motorcycle Diaries (2004).
Eco proved so successful, in fact, that it was re-released with bonus material as Eco² (2005). Subsequent albums include 12 Segundos de Oscuridad (2006), the double-disc live album Cara B (2008), and Amar la Trama (2010).

Uno de los dos polos
De esta historia, la mitad
Apenas medio elenco estable
Una de las dos variables
En esta polaridad
Y en el otro extremo
De esa línea, estás tú
Mi tormento
Mi fabuloso complemento
Mi fuente de salud
Deseo
Mire donde mire, te veo
Mire donde mire, te veo
Mire donde mire, te veo, oh oh
Igual que haré millones de siglos
En un microscópico mundo distante, se unieron
Dos células cualquiera
Instinto
Dos seres distintos
Amándose por vez primera
Deseo
Mire donde mire, te veo
Mire donde mire, te veo
Mire donde mire, te veo oh oh, oh oh oh oh oh
Dulce magnetismo
Dos cargas opuestas buscando lo mismo
Dulce magnetismo
Dos cargas opuestas buscando lo mismo
Deseo
Mire donde mire, te veo
Mire donde mire, te veo
Mire donde mire, te veo oh oh
Deseo
Mire donde mire, te veo
Mire donde mire, te veo
Donde mire, te veo oh oh
Deseo
Mire donde mire, te veo
Mire donde mire, te veo
Mire donde mire, te veo oh oh
Deseo
Mire donde mire, te veo
Mire donde mire, te veo
Mire donde mire, te veo oh oh
Deseo
Mire donde mire, te veo
Mire donde mire, te veo
Donde mire, te veo oh oh, deseo
The lyrics to Jorge Drexler's "Deseo" describe the singer's feelings of polar attraction towards someone else. He explains that he is only one half of the story, one of two poles that are attracted to each other. He sees himself as part of a balanced equation, a variable that needs the other half to make sense. The other person is his torment and his fabulous complement, the yin to his yang. He even describes this person as his source of health, hinting that their bond is important to his well-being.
The chorus repeats the word "deseo," which in Spanish means desire. The singer declares that no matter where he looks, he sees the other person. His attraction towards them is so strong that it echoes the origins of life itself. He describes how, in a distant microscopic world, two cells united instinctively, and two separate beings fell in love. The final lines of the song describe their relationship as a sweet magnetism, two opposite charges that are seeking the same thing.
Overall, "Deseo" is a song about the power of attraction and the importance of balance in relationships. The lyrics suggest that the singer and his partner need each other to make sense of the world around them.
