unpopular opinion: i loved her personality throughout the whole show and she literally brought most of the comedy to balance out an otherwise very dark show that would have just been depressing to watch in parts without her funny outbursts and scenes.
edit: 1:39 when i tell you i almost pissed myself at her reaction and response

edit edit: and she also went out like a boss. she was one of the only ones (without spoiling anyone about the show) that went out on her own terms and had possibly one of the best and most bad ass deaths. i keep editing because she is just a fucking awesome character.

I just thought of a theory that explains a lot about Han Mi-nyeo.
My theory:
Han Mi-nyeo has been to prison before.
She either just got out of prison or she went in a while long but can't find legitimate work because of her record and that could be way she's in debt.
The child thing was a lie just to get the guards to let her go free hence why she voted to stay after her outburst and finding out how much money was on the line.
Episode 3 is where she really shows the evidence that she's been to prison before.
She seeks out the strongest people immediately to form an alliance, she sneaks contraband in by hiding it in her body, she gives the guards attitude despite them being armed, her willingness to cheat and/or throw people under the bus to get ahead, etc.
That's where her fear of being seen as weak/helpless/useless comes from as showing weakness/uselessness is the worst thing you can do in prison.
Also explaining her lack of fear of death as she probably had near death experiences in prison.
I may be off but I personally think I'm onto something with this.

I see her as being from a lower socio-economic background and therefore not following the same norms of respectability as higher classes, probably not receiving access to higher education, and likey not getting the same opportunities as men of her class on top of that . And because of that she's had to be clever and loud as a way to advertise her own worth and scrape by a living. I also suspect that she's had to rely heavily on the resources she can get from proximity to men - namely financial security and physical protection. That's just my hunch though seeing as how she tried so hard to make herself useful to Deok-su despite his disgusting behavior toward her. Wouldn't be surprised if she put up with a lot of that kinda thing in the outside world just to get by.
And yeah I think you're right that being funny and outrageous is her defense mechanism to some extent. In that first scene between her and Deok-su, he humiliates her in from of a bunch of men but more importantly I think in front of another, younger woman. She's clearly shaken and I think part of it is the result of having to face this humiliation in front of a woman that should look up to her in terms of seniority you know? But she had no recourse except to sorta kinda laugh it off and call them assholes.
Anyway sorry for long reply no one asked for, I just love her sm 😭

I just love how well the actor played her. That’s the thing I like about her is the fact I forgot thats not how the actors really is. It’s not bad actors it’s amazing acting. These actors are highly impressive. I love actors who make me forget that the characters aren’t real.
