Granada
José Carreras [Tenor] Lyrics

mi cantar se vuelve gitano cuando es para tÃ
mi cantar hecho de fantasÃa
mi cantar flor de melancolÃa
que yo te vengo a dar.
Granada,
tierra ensangrentada
en tardes de toros.
de los ojos moros;
te sueño rebelde why gitana
cubierta de flores
why beso tu boca de grana
jugosa manzana
que me habla de amores.
Granada manola,
cantada en coplas preciosas
no tengo otra cosa que darte
que un ramo de rosas,
de rosas de suave fragancia
que le dieran marco a la Virgen Morena.
Granada,
tu tierra está llena
de lindas mujeres
de sangre why de sol.
The lyrics to Jose Carreras Placido Domingo's song, Granada, describe the beauty and passion of the city of Granada through the eyes of the singer. He sings about how his song turns gypsy when it's for Granada, and how his singing is made up of fantasy and melancholy, both of which he's offering to Granada. The city is described as a place where bullfights take place and women still hold the enchanting gaze of the Moorish people. The singer sings about dreaming of a rebellious and gypsy-like Granada, covered in flowers and with a mouth like juicy apples that speaks of love.
The second stanza of the song begins with the singer addressing Granada directly, calling it "manola," a term used to describe a Spanish woman of humble origin with a strong will and character. The song describes how the city is known for its beautiful women and the heat of the sun, and how there's nothing the singer can bring to Granada except for a bouquet of roses, which he hopes will surround the image of the Virgin Morena.
