Con Mis Propias Manos
José Feliciano Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

In José Feliciano's song Con Mis Propias Manos, the singer laments the loss of a loved one who has left at dawn with tear-streaked eyes. Although the singer loves the person deeply, he watches her leave with pride rather than speaking up about his feelings. Afterward, the singer feels as though he has metaphorically dug the grave for his own soul, as his cowardice has caused him to lose the chance to be with the one he loves. He sees the sadness and possibly even death in her eyes during their goodbye, and wonders if he has condemned her to an unfortunate fate because of his failure to express his love.

The song reveals the regret and pain that comes from not expressing one's emotions honestly and bravely. The singer's sadness at losing his chance with the one he loves is palpable, as he sees himself as the cause of his own heartache. The lyrics also speak to the universal human struggle of grappling with desire vs. fear, and the high price that can come from letting fear win out. Ultimately, the song is an ode to the human need for connection and the importance of taking risks in order to find it.
