El Jinete
José Feliciano Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hombre y guitarra llorando
A la luz de las estrellas
Después se pierde en la noche
Y aunque la noche es muy bella
Él va pidiéndole a Dios
Que se lo lleve con ella
La quería más que a su vida
Y la perdió para siempre
Por eso lleva una herida
Por eso busca la muerte
Por eso lleva una herida
Por eso
Busca la muerte
The song "El Jinete" by Jose Feliciano tells the story of a lone horseman riding through the distant mountains, who is consumed with grief and longing for death. The rider carries a deep wound in his chest, which has left his soul shattered. He wishes to end his life and reunite with his beloved, whom he loved more than his own life.
The rider’s grief is so intense that he spends his nights singing and playing his guitar, while shedding tears beneath the stars. In the light of the night, he hopes that God will hear his prayers and bring him to his lost love. The song continues to describe the rider’s relentless search for death, as he is unable to cope with the pain of living without his beloved.
The lyrics of the song paint a picture of a man who is broken and consumed with grief, carrying a deep wound in his chest that he cannot heal. Throughout the song, the rider struggles with his desire for death and his deep love for the woman he has lost. The use of the guitar and the stars as symbols of his sadness and longing creates a poignant and touching image of his pain.

This is one of my very favorite songs and performances of all time! Found it on Feliciano's double live album many years ago.
