Sabor A Mi
José Feliciano Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tanto tiempo disfrutamos de este amor
Nuestras almas se acercaron tanto así
Que yo guardo tu sabor
Pero tú llevas también
Sabor a mí.

Si negaras mi presencia en tu vivir
Bastaría con abrazarte y conversar
Tanta vida yo te di
Que por fuerza tienes ya
Sabor a mí.

No pretendo ser tu dueño
No soy nada yo no tengo vanidad
De mi vida doy lo bueno
Soy tan pobre, qué otra cosa puedo dar.

Pasarán más de mil años, muchos más
Yo no sé si tenga amor la eternidad
Pero allá, tal como aquí

El la boca llevarás
Sabor a mí.

Overall Meaning

José Feliciano's song Sabor A Mi is a love ballad that speaks of a love that has endured for so long that the two lovers' souls have become intertwined. The lyrics open by describing how much time the couple has enjoyed being in love with each other and how close they have become. The singer says that he carries the flavor of his lover, but she also carries his flavor. This phrase has a double meaning - not only does the singer keep the taste of his lover in his heart and on his lips, but he also lives with the memories of their love.

The second verse of the song is a bit sad and speaks of a possible breakup. The singer expresses his fear of being forgotten by his lover and of not being present in her life anymore. However, he says that if he were to be denied presence in her life, all he would need is to hug her and have a conversation, because they have shared so much together. The singer then acknowledges that he has given much of his life to his lover, and therefore she has become a part of him. The song ends on a bittersweet note, with the acknowledgment that time will pass and love may change, but the taste of the singer and his lover will remain with them forever.

I'm a musician (flute and sax player), and a few years ago I had the honor to play with José in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, informally, with a group named Caobaná on a fathers day. Believe me, this man is a monster musician; truly, truly fantastic!!! He was there because he was celebrating fathers day with his brother who happened to work as a chef at the club where we were playing (Arecibo Country Club). He was part of the public and the people there started to ask him to play a few songs (José, José, José !!!!) He obliged. Boy, when he got on that stage, he took the whole show like magic. He sang song after song, perfectly. We started to fit in with his songs and it all came out nice without any rehearsal. Boy, what an experience for me to have such a pleasure in sharing the same stage with this fantastic musician. One of my best musical moments as a musician. A dream come true without even expecting it. Never thought that José would even have been there.
