Open Book
José González Lyrics
I feel just like an open book,
Exposing myself in this neighborhood
Talking to people as if I'd knew them well
Thinking that everyone has come through different kinds of well
Lately I found myself in doubt,
Ask myself what it's all about
What am I doing here? What's this leading to?
What's the point of all? I found you!
I've got promises to keep like a cannon would land upon my feet,
Each time I fall
Every now and then in dreams by the river with no trees
Leaves are yellow, red and brown, and I hear
You whisper in my ear
Your love belong to everyone
I feel just like an open book,
A couple of words, it's all it took
In front of the bright white covers, still vacantly
Against my will, a drifting vessel in the storm
Pushed around, from shore to shore
I know there's so much left to see
I know I have so much left to give
But the memories remain, yet the scars don't feel the same

[Chorus 1]
I feel just like an open book
Exposing myself in this neighborhood
Talking to people as if I knew them well
Thinking that everyone
Has gone through different kinds of Hell
[Verse 1]
Lately I've found myself in doubt
Asking myself what it's all about
What am I doing here, what's this leading to?
What's the point of it all without you?
[Verse 2]
Well, I've got promises to keep
Like a cat I know I'll land upon my feet
Each time I fall
[Chorus 2]
Every now and then in dreams
By the river 'neath our tree
Leaves in yellow, red and brown
I hear you whisper in my ear
Your love belongs to everyone
[Verse 3]
I feel just like an open book
A couple of words was all it took
In front of a bright white canvas
Staring vacantly now free against my will
[Verse 4]
A drifting vessel in the storm
Pushed around from shore to shore
I know there's so much left to see
I know I have so much left to give
[Verse 5]
But the memories remain
Yet the scars don't feel the same
Filling pages one by one
In the warmth of other suns

I had a horrifying nightmare. I’d been talking to someone important to me, whose been struggling with addiction, and we were messaging on these weird devices, kinda like an etchosketch. It felt alive though. She asked me, as though she were there in the room, “Wow. Did I fall asleep so early at like 8?”
I said. “No. You slept all day.”
I think I went to type “don’t you remember” but she’d been sending a reply when the screen, up until that point bright and yellow, as I said, almost alive, cracked and instantly went blank and dull.
I knew what it meant. She’d died. I screamed in terror and, true to nightmares of this nature, there was no sound. I ran to my car because I had to see her without even putting my shoes on. But the windshield glass was broken. I ran back inside to get my shoes, not even realizing I was still holding the broken “etchosketch”.
Blood red letters appear on it saying, “SHE’S DEAD”. I hurled it against a wall hoping it would shatter. It didn’t, and I woke up.
This song was in my head afterward.
When I saw the video, for the first time in well over a year, I understood it was because of that thing. It’s kinda horrifying. My mind connects this song with horror. Weird.

I think that everyone "carries" with something we don't like (the creature that is carried by José) and it bothers us. The video has a nice ending, because José leaves the creature, he somehow got over the thing that bothers him, so as we are supposed to do. It's a really good song, have a nice day.
