The song Crosses, from Crosses EP and the later Veneer, appeared on the finale of the second season of the popular American television comedy-drama The O.C.. His cover of Heartbeats (also from Veneer) was used in a popular Sony BRAVIA TV commercial featuring coloured bouncing balls in San Francisco and an episode of Zach Braff's Scrubs
His song Far Away was also prominently featured in the Rockstar video game Red Dead Redemption.
His trademark sound is solo acoustic guitar with soft melody. His work, although mostly original, does include acoustic covers of great hits such as Love Will Tear Us Apart, Born in the U.S.A., and Teardrop.
González also appears in the Zero 7 album The Garden, in which he sings on three tracks and on a re-worked version of Crosses.

Trying to make sense of the now
Trying to make sense of the past
To show us how
Visions
Imagining the worlds that could be
Shaping a mosaic of fates
Visions
Cycles of growth and decay
Cascading chains of events
With no one to praise or blame
Visions
Avoidable suffering and pain
We are patiently inching our way
Toward unreachable utopias
Visions
Enslaved by the forces of nature
Elevated by mindless replicators
Challenged to steer our collective destiny
Visions
Look at the magic of reality
While accepting with all honesty
That we can't know for sure what's next
No, we can't know for sure what's next
But that we're in this together
We are here together
We are here together
We are here together
Oh, we are here together
We are here together
In José González's song "Visions," the lyrics capture the theme of seeking understanding and meaning in the present and past, as well as the possibilities that lie within our imagination. The song suggests that we are constantly shaping the paths of destiny for all living beings, pondering both the cycles of growth and decay and the chains of events that unfold without anyone to either praise or blame.
González reflects on the avoidable suffering and pain that we encounter as we strive towards unreachable utopias. He paints a picture of humanity being both enslaved by the forces of nature and elevated by mindless replicators, facing the challenge of steering our collective destiny. The lyrics then invite us to marvel at the magic of reality, emphasizing the importance of accepting the uncertainty of what comes next while acknowledging our interconnectedness and the fact that we are all in this together.
Overall, "Visions" encourages us to embrace our role as co-creators of the world, recognizing the complexity of existence and the necessity of unity in facing the unknown.
