Heartbeats
José González and The Knife Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One night to be confused
One night to speed up truth
We had a promise made
Four hands and then away

Both under influence
We had divine scent
To know what to say
Mind is a razor blade

To call for hands of above
To lean on
Wouldn't be good enough
For me, no

One night of magic rush
The start a simple touch
One night to push and scream
And then relief

Ten days of perfect tunes
The colors red and blue
We had a promise made
We were in love

To call for hands of above
To lean on
Wouldn't be good enough
For me, no

To call for hands of above
To lean on
Wouldn't be good enough

And you, you knew the hands of the devil
And you, kept us awake with wolfs teeth
Sharing different heartbeats
In one night

To call for hands of above
To lean on
Wouldn't be good enough
For me, no

To call for hands of above

To lean on
Wouldn't be good enough

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to José González's song Heartbeats are about a transformative experience between two people. It chronicles the emotional journey of a couple who have one night to explore each other's sentiments and push the boundaries of what they both thought was possible. The song is an ode to the beauty of fleeting experiences, the vastness of love and intimacy, and the search for something that is transcendent and meaningful.

The first verse talks about the initial meeting where the two individuals were confused and under the influence. They had a promise made between them, and both had a sense of divine intuition which allowed them to know what to say to each other. The line "mind is a razor blade" seems to suggest the sharpness and intensity of the emotional experience they shared.

The second verse talks about the continuation of their relationship, where they had ten days of perfect tunes and experienced the colors red and blue - possibly indicating a multi-faceted experience. They had a promise made, and they were in love.

The third verse describes a darker aspect of their experience, where one of the individuals knew the "hands of the devil" and kept them awake with "wolf's teeth." Despite this, they continued to share different heartbeats in one night - a powerful metaphor for the deep connection they had.

Overall, the lyrics to Heartbeats are enigmatic and thought-provoking. The song highlights the deep and complex nature of human relationships, and the power they have to change and transform us.

My son had chosen this to be played at his funeral, which we did 8 years ago. Always makes me think of his gentleness, love and kindness to everyone.
