Pajarillo

Era joven y fiel, era rosa y espina
The song "Pajarillo" by José María Napoleón tells the story of a young woman who sells her body in order to survive. She wears a lot of makeup and sells her skin for a high price. She stands on a corner from eight to ten in the evening and goes by the name of "rosa y espina" or "rose and thorn". The singer, who is a young boy, watches her but never speaks to her. He sees her as a bird with white wings, flying from balcony to balcony, offering her love and song. The woman is arrested twenty times but still sings her song behind bars.
Five winters pass, and the boy still sees her standing in the same place, with the same rose and a growing thorn. She still smiles at the passersby under the street lamp, but her beauty begins to fade. She can no longer hide the effects of the sixth winter with makeup, and the boy notices the wrinkles and blemishes. Eventually, she dies, leaving only the street lamp and the thorn in her place, and nobody knows her name.

Maquillaje a granel usaba a diario
She used make-up in bulk every day
Y vendía la piel a precio caro
And she sold her skin at a high price
From eight to ten in a corner
Era joven y fiel, era rosa y espina
She was young and faithful, she was rose and thorn
And she was called, I don't know, I never knew
Nunca le pregunté, nunca dispuse
I never asked, I never had the chance
Of her time and her skin, I was just a kid
Y tan solo le miré de pozo en pozo
And I just looked at her from well to well
Y era un pajarillo de blancas alas
And she was a little bird with white wings
From balcony to balcony, from square to square
Vendedora de amor, ofrecedora
Seller of love, offering
Para el mejor postor de su tonada
To the highest bidder of her tune
Cinco inviernos pasaron y ahí seguía
Five winters passed and there she was
The same time as yesterday, the same corner
Era joven y fiel, y aún tenía

The rose of her skin and a bigger thorn
Y sonreía al pasar de los mirones
And she smiled as the onlookers passed by
Bajo de aquel farol, noche tras noche
Under that streetlamp, night after night
Veinte veces se la llevaron presa
Twenty times they took her prisoner
And she sang her song behind bars
Her skin and make-up wrinkled
Suficiente no fue para taparle
It wasn't enough to cover her
La huella que dejó el sexto invierno
The mark left by the sixth winter
She ran out of color and even breath
And from eight to ten only on the corner
Se quedó aquel farol y aquella espina
That streetlamp and that thorn remained
La rosa no sé yo donde se iría
I don't know where the rose went
Se llamaba no sé y sonreía
She was called I don't know and she smiled
