Tally Marks
Joseph Lyrics

Flashes of your empty rooms...
It all adds up like the tally marks you drew.
Another touch, another meaningless move...
Is that really all you've got?
Show me different.
What you've done cannot be undone,
But you'll wake up to another sun.
Under your hood, there's a man that I knew.
His eyes are fire and his hands are true.
Where is he? Where are you?
Noble and staggering.
I don't need something perfect.
Hear me now - I could be your undoing...
Your pretty thing and the friction that sparks your fire.
What you've done cannot be undone,
But you'll wake up to another sun
I've got a sense about you.
Under your hood, there's a man that I knew.
His eyes are fire and his hands are true.
Where is he? Where are you?
Where is he? Where are you?
What you've done cannot be undone,
But you'll wake up to another sun.
What you've done cannot be undone,
But you'll wake up to another sun.
The song "Tally Marks" by Joseph addresses issues of regret and missed opportunities. The chorus "What you've done cannot be undone, but you'll wake up to another sun" recognizes that the past cannot be changed but encourages the listener to make a change for their future. The tally marks referenced in the lyrics symbolize keeping score of past experiences or mistakes. The repetitive nature of tally marks also highlights the cyclical nature of the singer's regrettable behavior.
The song's bridge offers a glimmer of hope as the singer implies that there is another side to the person she is addressing, someone who is noble and virtuous - "Under your hood, there's a man that I knew. His eyes are fire and his hands are true. Where is he? Where are you?" The repeated lines "Where is he? Where are you?" suggest that the singer still sees glimpses of this person's true self but is asking them to take action to reclaim their better qualities.
Overall, "Tally Marks" is a poignant call to action for the listener to take responsibility for their actions and strive towards a more meaningful and productive life.
