In "Set Fire to the Rain," Josh Heinrichs talks about a relationship that had a lot of ups and downs. The relationship felt dark at first, but it shifted when the other person shared a kiss with the singer that changed things. The singer felt weak in the knees around the other person, but he or she had a side that was never seen before. The relationship had a lot of dishonesty and games, but the other person always won. However, in the end, the singer sets fire to the rain and throws everything into the flames because the relationship is over. Even when it's over, the singer can't help looking for the other person.
The song seems to be about the aftermath of a love that's over. While the relationship had downs along with ups, the singer remembers moments where everything was beautiful while they were together.
