Arriving at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi, he had initial aspirations of being an art major, while also being a very capable golfer and a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
Kelley released his indie album Changing Faces in 2001, signing with Hollywood in 2002. Working with John Alagia as his producer, Kelley released For The Ride Home in 2003. He also made an appearance at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in 2003. The song "Everybody Wants You" was recommended to be written by a friend to not forget who he is, while "Amazing" was possibly his first critically acclaimed hit.
Josh Kelley's 2011 record, Georgia Clay, was his first Country album; his previous work was more pop. Speaking with Songfacts in a 2011 interview, Kelley explained that Gone Like That was the song that actually started his journey into Country music. He said: "I had written and presented it to my music publisher to pitch to other artists, but they liked my demo so much they encouraged me to cut it. It was the first song I wrote that gave me the confidence to pursue a career as a Country singer."
His musical guise can be recognized akin to Jack Johnson, John Mayer, or Ben Harper.
Kelley remains a supporter of Napster-like sharing peer to peer applications for independent artists who have a difficult time receiving an audience. In fact, Kelley was "found" after accidentally targeting Eric Clinger at Hollywood Records with private spam messages using the Napster program.
Solid Ground

With the wrongs and right have faded gray
If I told you once you told me twice
How the love of both can turn the wise
It's so easy to turn my head around
But now I've beat the odds
Got my feet on solid ground
It's so hard just movin' on
And being without you just seems so wrong
But time only heals our wounds
For me it takes time for you so soon
It's so easy to turn my head around
But now I've beat the odds
Got my feet on solid ground
Falling further from where we used to be
All things said and done, I needed to be free
It's so easy to turn my head and run
But now I've beat the odds
Got my feet on solid ground
I'm better now without you hear
I've got a job and my mind is clear
From what I hear you want me back
But the tide has turned and I'm relaxed
It's so easy to turn my head around
But now I've beat the odds
Got my feet on solid ground
But now I've beat the odds
And I'm back on solid ground
But now I've beat the odds
And I'm back on solid ground
The song "Solid Ground" by Josh Kelley is about moving on from a past love and finding happiness and stability in oneself. The lyrics explore the emotions of someone reflecting on a previous relationship and how, despite the difficulty of moving on and the pain and heartbreak associated with it, the process can lead to growth and positive change. The song touches on the idea that it is easy to turn back and cling to a past love or what is familiar, but true strength comes from moving forward and finding solid ground within oneself.
The lyrics in the chorus emphasize the idea that beating the odds and finding solid ground is a process that takes time and patience. There is no magic formula or quick fix to heal a broken heart, but it is possible to come out stronger and more content on the other side. The verses offer specific instances of struggle and growth, such as the singer needing time to heal while the other person wants to reconcile, and ultimately coming to the realization that they are better off without the other person.
Overall, "Solid Ground" is a hopeful song about the power of self-growth and finding stability and happiness within oneself.
