Rouse lived in various places in Midwest America during his childhood due to his father's military career. Following his time at Austin Peay State University, he eventually settled down in Tennessee, where he met some local musicians and began recording. Signing to the Rykodisc subsidiary Slow River, in 1998, Rouse issued his debut album, Dressed Up Like Nebraska, to widespread critical acclaim; upon settling in Nashville, he was befriended by Kurt Wagner, frontman of the endlessly brilliant chamber country group Lambchop, and in the fall of 1999, the two singers/songwriters issued a collaborative EP, Chester.
Rouse's second solo LP, Home, appeared the following spring and was followed by Under the Cold Blue Stars in 2002. For his next record Rouse hooked up with producer Brad Jones and the resulting album in 2003, 1972, was both a homage to the soft rock sounds of Rouse's youth and an opening up and deepening of his sound. Before the release of his next album, Rouse's marriage ended and he moved from Nashville to Spain. This spawned 2004's Nashville, an example of his versatile musical talent, featuring a blend of Rock, Jazz and Ballad. It served as a farewell to both the city and his marriage; it was also his most fully realized record to date. This album was chosen as one of Amazon.com's Top 100 Editor's Picks of 2005 (#80).
Rouse's next album, called Subtitulo, was released March 21, 2006 in which his move to Spain was evident. It marked a further finessing of his sound and a move towards the music of an early Paul Simon.
2007 saw a rather busy year for Rouse. He started off supporting John Mayer on a series of his Winter Tour dates. Not soon after, he released a joint EP with his girlfriend Paz Suay, under the moniker of She's Spanish, I'm American. At the end of July, Rouse released his 7th LP, Country Mouse, Cit y House. The record marked a detour from Subtitulo, offering a fuller, more instrumental sound, which appeared to divide both critics and fans. Rouse toured extensively worldwide to support the album.
He released "El Turista" in February 2010 and "The Happiness Waltz" in 2013.

It's The Nighttime
Josh Rouse Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You got your headphones on
I see you dancing around
To your favorite song
It's ‘Who do you Love'
I want to know his name
And does he feel like I feel
Is he standing in the rain
I'm out in the street
The city lights above
It's the nighttime baby
Don't let go of my love
You've come a long way baby
From your days at school
I heard you're really living uptown
I'm just a downtown fool
And would it be all right
If I took you for a ride
Took you out on the town
Maybe someplace nice
Out in the street
City lights above
It's the nighttime baby
Don't let go of my love
And maybe later on
After the late late show
We can go to your room
I can try on your clothes
You know I'm not the kind of man
To come on so strong
But when you look as good as you do
I knew it wouldn't be long
I'm out in the street
The city lights above
It's the nighttime baby
Don't let go of my love
It's the nighttime baby
Don't let go of my love
Yeah, It's the nighttime baby
Don't let go of my love, love
Don't let go of my love
The song "It's The Nighttime" by Josh Rouse is a romantic ballad about a man who is deeply in love with a woman who is playing her stereo loud and dancing alone to her favorite song. He is curious about who the song is about and whether that person feels the same way he does. The lyrics are melancholic and vulnerable, as the man is expressing his own feelings of love and insecurity. He wants to take the woman out on a date and spend the night with her, hoping that she won't let go of his love.
The first verse shows the woman on her own, dancing and enjoying her music, while the man is watching her from the street. The song is set at night, which suggests that the man is perhaps feeling lonely or nostalgic. He is curious about the woman's emotions and who she's thinking of when she's dancing. The lyrics "you got your headphones on" and "is he standing in the rain" suggest that the woman is lost in her own world and possibly feeling melancholic or romantic.
In the second verse, the man admits that he knows the woman has moved up in the world and is now living uptown, whereas he's still a "downtown fool". He asks if he can take her out on a date, to a nice place. The lyrics "maybe someplace nice" imply that he might not be able to afford the kind of place she's used to, but he's willing to try to make it happen.
The chorus is repeated twice, emphasizing the theme of nighttime and the man's desire for the woman not to let go of his love. The last verse is more suggestive, as the man suggests that they can go to the woman's room and he can try on her clothes. The lyrics "I knew it wouldn't be long" imply that he's been waiting for this moment for a while, suggesting an underlying tension and desire between the two.
Overall, "It's The Nighttime" is a poignant song about longing and the desire for connection and love, set in the magical and mysterious world of nighttime.
