Why Don't We Just Dance
Josh Turner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, why don't we just turn that TV off?
Three hundred fifteen channels of nothing but bad news on
Well, it might be me but the way I see it
The whole wide world has gone crazy
So baby, why don't we just dance?

Just a little bitty living room, ain't gonna look like much
But when the lights go down and we move the couch
It's gonna be more than enough
For my two left feet and our two hearts beatin'
Nobody's gonna see us go crazy
So baby, why don't we just dance?

Down the hall, maybe straight up the stairs?
Bouncing off the wall, floating on air
Baby, why don't we just dance?

Baby, why don't you go put your best dress on
And those high heeled shoes you love to lose
As soon as the tunes come on?
On second thought
Just the way you are
Is already driving me crazy
So baby, why don't we just dance?

Down the hall, maybe straight up the stairs?
Bouncing off the wall, floating on air
Baby, why don't we just dance?
I'll cut a rug

Well, it might be me but the way I see it
The whole wide world has gone crazy
So baby, why don't we just dance?

(Bouncing off the walls, floating on air)
Oh baby (baby), why don't we just dance?

Overall Meaning

In Josh Turner's song "Why Don't We Just Dance," the lyrics suggest escaping from the chaos of the world by staying in and dancing. The opening lyrics mention the overwhelming amount of bad news on TV, and the singer proposes turning it off and just dancing. The song suggests that dancing with someone can be a great escape from the stress of the world. The singer suggests that although their living room may not look like much, with the lights off and the couch moved, it's enough for them to dance and not worry about anyone watching. The song goes on to suggest dancing in various locations, such as down the hall or straight up the stairs. The last line of the chorus repeats the question of why they don't just dance and adds phrases about bouncing off the wall and floating on air.

The more I listen to this song, the more meaning comes to me. This is a literal metaphor on life and love.
Why do we sit at home (or anywhere) overcome by thoughts of evil doings (bad news), when we could be literally loving music and life and love and expressing it in dance, (together or alone)?
We could kick off our shoes and let the rhythms take over, move in whatever way feels right.
It doesn't matter if you are tone deaf or you have two left feet or can't 'dance'... anyone can move to music and why should we feel that it is socially unnaceptable to move in any way that feels good?
You don't need 'professional' dance moves to love music.
I can't dance or even keep rhythm all the time, I have physical restrictions, but even I can move to music in a comfortable way, that expresses my joy in music and life and myself.
This song makes me want to dance and makes me feel happy and good. That's what music should do!
Why can't we just dance?
Way to go, Josh! That's real achievement man!

My oldest Son grabbed me in the kitchen to dance. We two stepped around the kitchen. He said "dang Mother, we still got it" and I laughed. 2 weeks later my healthy 32 year old child, went to sleep and never woke up. Please dance every moment you can. I hold onto that beautiful memory until we can dance again.
