@Darth Bane It is, but it still feels authentic. One way to end the cycle of vengeance is to forgive, when you can't do that leave nobody alive to take revenge. They should have killed him, but they didn't and now they're suffering for it. What sort of people do you think those kids would have grown up to be? Can you honestly say you think they'd turn out well? The spoiled sons of a sickenly cruel crime boss? Or would they become violent and wicked men like their father? Sure they were denied that choice, but ultimately their deaths are the result of their own father's actions. You can't indiscriminately inflict suffering on others and then expect consideration in return.

Even in the smallest details, Benicio is such an amazing actor. That deep breath he took right after killing the wife and kids; like the realization of crossing a line you cant come back from. He was already a dark soul but in that moment he became the same evil that took his family away. It was the only way to get real revenge for him.

I like how "the meal" is really about life. you can eat your meal/ live your life just fine. but when someone is trying to kill you it becomes difficult, and eventually he makes a point by shooting his family first, then saying "Go on... Finish your meal" basically showing him that it is impossible to just live your life after something like that like he expected would happen after the death of his daughter. Once that point is made and he cannot "Finish his meal" then he finishes it for him.

Studies have shown that the driving factor that make revenge pleasing to the person is the moment when they make others go through the same amount of pain and suffering in their last moments as they did. Its cathartic. And that's portrayed beautiful here. The Boss has no idea whats coming for him. He gets a few moments to reflect on his own action in the past, then gets his family murdered right in front of his eyes just like how he did it to the protagonists family. Just beautiful. Film Writer: I really wanted to cement the theme of this movie that there's a triumvirate between justice, vengeance, and obsession. What makes Benecio Del Toro's character incredibly sinister is that straddles all three so that he can pursue personal interests However, I wrote this scene specific so the audience knew- without a doubt- he is beyond redemption and by no means worthy of holding to a heroic standard-

One the greatest elements of this movie is (and there are so many) is that the bad guys throughout the movie are just completely and utterly outclassed by the operatives. Even when he’s going through the home to get to this guy and his family, he has the huge advantage of the heat sensitive images and recon to tell him exactly where the bad guys are and how many are still alive.

This scene is so vivid, so real and close to nature. You really see the powerplay during the scene, the druglord fights every defense mechanism to uphold and image, until the very end. But he fails when he couldnt bring himself to continue eating. Benicio Del Toro did an excellent job of noticing that he broke the man finally. But it only made him more angry.

I grew up in El Paso during the 2000s, back when Juarez Mexico was the murder capital of the world (in some ways it still is), and I remember seeing the kids I grew up with come to school in terror because they grew up in, or spent a lot of their time going between cities, crossing the border almost (and some probably did) daily.

I remember living with the fear that the crime was going to spill out into the city any day, and feeling like we were being ignored by the rest of Texas and the world. And fast forward and I saw this movie when it came out when I was in high school and I remember the applause that the theater gave when Alejandro kills the cartel guy, how happy I felt during the end of this scene, it felt amazing knowing that they depicted what so many people wanted to do themselves in a cold, calculating, manner.

It was traditional in the old days, growing up in the 90s people were too cool for it, but then as the internet came around, true hype started happening, unspoken excitement, inside jokes. Like everybody in the theatre had been talking to each other for a year about one thing happening without ever letting one another. Then it happens and everybody dog piles onto the insider hype.
Like one big unspoken inside joke.
It’s actually very endearing when you think about it, but I hate crowded theatres

@thebesttheworst I feel like it depends. If it’s a movie that’s meant to be a big shoot em up blockbuster, then yes. Like take Endgame for example, during the movie you had so many videos and reports of people clapping, screaming, and cheering as if it were a stage performance and that’s either a good or a bad thing depending on your investment in what your watching.

In other movies, like Sicario, I think (at least in my case because of El Paso’s proximity to Juarez) if a certain point resonates so much with the audience at key scenes, they’ll pop as hard as they did for the moments on screen.

Ultimately I don’t personally believe it’s entirely an American thing, I think it just depends on the investment of the crowd

He decides to leave the mob boss alive so he can feel what it's like to lose his family. Then he tells him to finish his meal (finish living your life). The cruelty of not only killing his family, but leaving him alive while knowing he will live the rest of his life in misery, is exactly what was done to the main character.

The intensity and tension in this scene is amazing. There was no need for music or special F/X. Just straight up great acting and a fantastic build up. The only other scene that has this same effect without any fancy shit is in No Country for Old Men, when Javier Bardem is in that dusty gas station with the nosy old man and he forces the coin toss to determine the old dude’s fate.

Once he realizes that the villain isn't vengeful and fearful as he was but instead grieving, he realizes that the revenge of living his life w/o family was completely lost.

I love that there's no Massive Muzzle Fire effect on some of the shots. Guns don't always produce such like you'd see in a lot of other movies.

The revenge part could have been ramped up by having del Toro shoot the boys first so the wife has to watch her children killed, then kill the wife so the drug lord has to watch his entire family killed. Still, it was a brilliant scene.

If anyone is wondering what exactly Benicio del Toro said in Spanish just before shooting everybody, he said “Ahora vas a conocer a Dios”. A direct translation is “now you’re going to know God”. The subtitle translation isn’t 100% correct.

What didn't help was when he said "it wasn't personal". The worst thing you can say to someone who is about to kill you as a result of your actions that caused someone's family to die. It is pretty damn personal and doesn't get more personal than that.

I'd say he could have decided to not kill the family, but there was probably still a 90% chance that no matter what he said, he was going to kill them all. He chose the place and time for that reason. If he wanted to simply kill him, he could have snuck into his bed at night and quietly did the deed. He chose to do it at dinner time. He chose to walk up to the dinner table. He fully intended to kill the entire family from the start, but his words did not give him any pause to not do it. As we see his face when he did do it, he felt zero remorse. No hesitation, no second guesses. He merely wanted to see the mans face when he got what was coming to him.
