Joshua Ray Walker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I stare at my reflection through bottles behind the bar
I didn't know hate could feel this good behind the wheel of a car

Might put this truck in neutral, let it roll into the lake
First I'll finish off this bottle, so it looks like a mistake

Holy name strengthens the beast
Be lucky if you're in one piece
Holy name strengthens the beast
Oh Lord, please give me peace

I loved you from the get go
You saved me from a funeral pyre
I told you I loved you
You called me a liar

Yeah, I've carried fire and I've waded through a flood
You dragged me on the wire, he bathed me in the blood

Holy name strengthens the beast
Be lucky if you're in one piece
Holy name strengthens the beast
Oh Lord, please give me peace

How long? How long are you going to make me wait?
How long? How long are you going to make me wait?
How long? How long are you going to make me wait?
How long? How long are you going to make me wait?

Might put this truck in neutral

Let it roll into the lake
First I'll finish off this bottle so it looks like a mistake

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Joshua Ray Walker's song "Voices" tell a story of a person experiencing intense emotions, possibly fueled by alcohol. The first verse sets the scene in a bar, where the singer is looking at themselves in the reflection of bottles behind the bar. They then express a feeling of hate, likely directed towards someone or something, and admit to enjoying the feeling while driving. The following lines suggest the singer may be considering suicide, intending to drive their truck into a lake and making it look like an accident. However, the mention of a holy name and a plea for peace indicate a struggle with inner demons and a desire for salvation. The second verse brings up a past relationship where the singer's love was not reciprocated, yet they still hold onto feelings for that person. The final repetition of the phrase "How long are you going to make me wait?" adds to the sense of frustration and impatience with the current situation.

Overall, the lyrics of "Voices" depict a person in a troubled state of mind, battling with inner turmoil and possibly the aftermath of a failed relationship. The mention of a holy name and a plea for peace could suggest a religious or spiritual aspect to the singer's struggles.

This song hit me a solid right hook. I have not had lyrics effect me like that since Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. I hope we can hang on to this young man, he burns the candle at both ends and his pain is real.

That was the first thing I said was ;OMG! That tune sounds a lot like Townes, who I might add;along with John Prine ,and of course my rock, hero, idle, guiding light, and my soul reason for ever sitting down behind a piano, guitar, banjo, bass, mandolin, or saxophone, “my old man” Billy Boggs are 3 of the most extraordinarily gifted humans who have ever walked the earth.

You are freaking amazing. I never leave comments but that’s how impressed I am with you

As a firefighter who has had some dark thoughts, I totally understand how being in those moments where you actually fear losing your life can put all those bleak spaces in their place. It’s only there that you are are truly reminded of how great it is to still be here trying.
