Karma
Joss Stone Lyrics

Oh yeah, yeah, uh-huh
If I was just a little bit stronger baby
Coulda make it last a little bit longer maybe
Coulda made it on my own
I should have just let you go
I should have been a little bit stronger baby

If I was just a little bit sweeter baby
I know, I know, I know I wouldn't be here alone
Thank God I'm a little bit mean baby

I am what I am, you did what you did
I'm glad I'm not a sinner baby, 'cause here's the twist
You are what you are, I saw what I saw
Come as your máster, and you're the bitch

You could have tried a little bit harder baby
You could have been a little bit smarter baby
I tried not to see when you were on and off for me
You could have tried a little bit harder baby

I am what I am, you did what you did
I'm glad I'm not a sinner baby, 'cause here's the twist
You are what you are, I saw what I saw
Come as your máster, and you're the bitch

Yes, you are, yeah
Now I got a loaded gun now baby
Gonna love to watch you run like a lady
And cry like a baby just like I did when you had gone, oh

See I, I should have been a little bit stronger
I should have been a little bit harder
Should have been a little bit tougher
Should have been a little bit smarter
Should have been a little bit rougher
Should have been a little bit stronger
Should have ran a little bit faster?
Away from you baby, away from you, oh

I'm maybe on my own, now the feeling's gone
It's all gone

Overall Meaning

In Joss Stone's song "Karma," she reflects on what could have been if she had been stronger and smarter in a past relationship. She expresses regret for not letting go sooner, realizing that she could have made it on her own without the other person. Joss also acknowledges that she wishes she had been sweeter, but ultimately she is grateful for her toughness and strength, which has helped her move on. The chorus repeats the idea that she is who she is and did what she did, and the other person is who they are, with the twist that Joss sees herself as the master and the other person as the one who's been manipulated.

The second half of the song takes a darker turn, with Joss proclaiming that she now has the upper hand and a "loaded gun." She wants to watch the other person suffer and cry like she did when they left. She concludes by lamenting on how she should have been stronger, harder, smarter, and faster to get away from them.

Overall, "Karma" is a song about introspection and self-examination, as well as the power dynamics of relationships. Joss Stone shows both vulnerability and strength in her lyrics, ultimately finding peace in knowing that the other person's actions don't have to define her.

Check out the live clips of her with Jeff Beck at the Royal Albert Hall. I'm not a huge fan, but I must admit (and I'm happy to do so) that she can rise to the occasion. If she were from Detroit instead of Dorset she'd be hailed and the new queen of something soul-ish. But in this video she's doing her funky thing in (what appears to be) Nashville with (who appears to be) Eurythmics mainman Dave Stewart... a real mess o' diverse factors and players, yet she still shines through. Good for her.
