Midnight
Journey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It begins to tell
'Round midnight, midnight
I do pretty well, till after sundown
Suppertime I'm feelin' sad
But it really gets bad
'Round midnight

Memories always start 'round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories
When my heart is still with you
And ol' midnight knows it, too
When a quarrel we had needs mending
Does it mean that our love is ending
Darlin' I need you, lately I find
You're out of my heart
And I'm out of my mind

Let our hearts take wings'
'Round midnight, midnight
Let the angels sing
For your returning
Till our love is safe and sound
And old midnight comes around
Feelin' sad

Really gets bad
Round, Round, Round Midnight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Journey's "Midnight" paint a picture of a person who is struggling with loneliness and heartbreak. The song is written from the perspective of someone who is haunted by the memories of a lost love. The opening line, "It begins to tell 'round midnight," sets the stage for the mood of the song, which is melancholy and introspective. The singer goes on to describe how they feel throughout the day, with the sadness increasing as night falls. The line "Suppertime I'm feelin' sad" speaks to the loneliness that many people feel when they are eating alone.

The chorus of the song is particularly poignant, with the lyrics "Memories always start 'round midnight, haven't got the heart to stand those memories." This line speaks to the way that memories can be particularly painful when someone is feeling alone and vulnerable. The singer notes that their heart is still with their lost love, even though they are no longer together. The line "When a quarrel we had needs mending, does it mean that our love is ending" suggests that the singer is still hoping that they can reconcile with their lost love.

The song ends on a hopeful note, with the lyrics "Let our hearts take wings 'round midnight" and "Till our love is safe and sound, and old midnight comes around." These lines suggest that the singer is still holding out hope that they can reunite with their lost love. The final line of the song, "Feelin' sad, really gets bad, round, round, round midnight," brings the song full-circle, emphasizing the relentlessness of the singer's sadness.

Main results

Just a small town girl
Livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train going anywhere
Just a city boy
Born and raised in South Detroit
He took the midnight train going anywhere

A singer in a smokey room
A smell of wine and cheap perfume
For a smile they can share the night
It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waitin'
Up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searchin' in the night
Streetlights, people
Livin' just to find emotion
Hidin', somewhere in the night

Workin' hard to get my fill
Everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anything to roll the dice
Just one more time

Some'll win, some will lose
Some are born to sing the blues
Whoa, the movie never ends
It goes on and on and on and on

Strangers waitin'
Up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searchin' in the night
Streetlights, people
Livin' just to find emotion
Hidin', somewhere in the night

Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feelin'
Streetlights, people

Don't stop believin'
Hold on
Streetlights, people

Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feelin'
Streetlights, people

last month on the 14th, my father passed away. he used to love this song, and could almost replicate the artist' vocals. A little over two weeks ago, we where driving (with my family) and this song came on. I knew it was my father. In the end, thank you journey for giving me the goodbye I needed.

We sang this when I was in fifth grade, and our choir teachers mom who was our neighbor used to cry when we sang this song for our elementary graduation. I will miss both of them dearly.
