Mother Father
Journey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She sits alone, an empty stare
A mother's face she wears
Where did she go wrong,
The fight is gone
Lord help this broken home

Hey, mother, father, sister
Hey, come back, tryin', believein'
Hey, mother, father, dreamer

Don't you know that I'm alive for you
I'm your sevenths son
And when lightin' strikes the family
Have faith, believe.

With dreams he tried, lost his pride
He drinks his life away
One photograph, in broken glass
It should not end this way.

Through bitter tears
And wounded years, those ties
Of blood were strong
So much to say, those yesterdays
So now don't you turn away.

Hey, mother, father, sister

Hey, come back, tryin', believein'
Hey, mother, father, dreamer

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Journey's song "Mother Father" convey the emotional pain and yearning of a person longing for the return of their estranged family. The song starts with emotional imagery of a mother's face, who seems to be lost and disconnected from her surroundings. The tone of the song is melancholic with a sense of despair, as the lyrics question where did it all go wrong, and the fight that once existed is now gone. The person singing the song pleads to the Lord for help to mend the broken home.

As the song progresses, the bridge conveys a message of hope and belief. The person singing is the seventh son, and they urge their family to come back and try to believe in one another. The person expresses an unwavering faith, that even when lightning strikes – a metaphor for significant, unforeseen events - the family should believe in one another. The following verses detail the difficulties that the father and the family have experienced; a father who has tried and lost his pride and is now drinking his life away, and a shattered family photograph, symbolizing the brokenness of the family. The lyrics culminate with the plea for the family to come back and not turn away from one another.

The song describes a story of struggle and strife, but also hope and the desire for healing. It speaks to anyone who has experienced the pain of a broken family and the longing for reconciliation. It is a testament to the importance of family and the bond that ties blood together.

I was EXTREMELY fortunate enough to be at this very concert. Little did I know, when they said they were recording the concert that I would be watching/listening 39 years later on a phone, and that the rest of the world could also do the same!

@joegrahe3958

The Summit hosted a lot of recorded concerts. I wonder if it was known for its acoustics

There's a reason you didn't ever see any live (or studio for that matter) vocal performances like the one in Houston by Mr. Perry. They were simply unattainable. His vocal level at the end of this song is indescribable. His passion undeniable. The entire band at their height. I was gifted an opportunity to see them live twice in the early 80's. Once indoors and once outdoors. Zero difference in the sound quality of the performances. I still drive right past that rural outdoor venue every day on my way to work. There have been countless occasions when I swear I can still hear Steve's stratospheric vocals ringing through the hills taking me back to a time and place that I am eternally grateful to have experienced. So thankful to have grown up listening to the music of the 70's and early 80's. Too many great bands to list but Journey will always be my pick for the best in terms of overall musicianship across the board led by a generational singer named Steve Perry. Thank you for the memories men! All respect......

Yes, this is so true. Classic Journey...so hard to find a word to give them the praise they deserve. And as for Steve Perry, our music master, I absolutely adore both the man and his music. This song, his vocals and passion at the end, never fail to make me cry. One of a kind, an enigma, a gem!!

@videomarknet

honestly gave me chills when I read this part ..."I still drive past that venue ... I can still hear Steve's stratospheric vocals ringing through the hills..." ....

At 57 years young I also was very fortunate to see Journey at JFK outdoor stadium in the early 80s. It was George Thourogood, Journey and the Rolling Stones. I was 16 and I have lived in Southern Delaware since 1976. I went with co workers and I honestly didn't care about the Rolling Stones. I went to see George T. and Journey !!!!!!!!! Steve's voice, the melodic rhythm, the power, the range, just everything about him was mind blowing !!!! Yes, his voice has changed as he aged but I adore him now, if not more, because he sings from the heart. His lyrics are fabulous. His new band is fantastic. And I personally think that his voice now is sexy , soft and beautiful.
Mother, Father is absolutely one of my all time favorites !!! No more cryin' is now one of my favorites . Both songs give me chills every time I listen to them. And that's alot !
He is still " The Voice ". 💙
