He released his first albums under the Jovanotti byname to later switch into his real name (Lorenzo), as of the mid-nineties.
Most of his output is hip-hop influenced, although not most of his work should be viewed as hip hop music per se. Many of his songs are not hip hop related and may probably be best viewed as part of the earlier Italian cantautore tradition. Some of his earlier work is also closer to keyboard-heavy 1980s pop. Most of his songs are sung in the Italian language; he also released a Spanish-language greatest hits album. His live album includes a short version of the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight". Jovanotti appears on several international compilations, most notably Red Hot + Rhapsody, a 1998 tribute to George Gershwin, on which he performed "I Got Rhythm". Jovanotti has also appeared in one Luciano Pavarotti's charity concert in 1996.
His CD, Buon Sangue, includes influences from both rock and old school hip hop. It is one of his most innovative works to date. Edoardo Bennato collaborated on one track, while bass player Saturnino co-wrote two of the songs.
One of his most recent CDs, "Ora", breaks new ground with a new style of production.

Accoglienza no no no alla violenza non rivendico nessuna appartenenza
In Jovanotti's song "L," the singer uses the metaphor of a tree to describe his life and purpose in the world. He compares himself to a tree that lives among other trees, and like a tree, he seeks to anchor himself firmly in the ground and withstand the winds of life. He takes in the sun to nourish his leaves, which provide shelter to birds and other creatures. He sheds his leaves and adapts to the seasons, depending on the weather and his genetic makeup.
The singer sees himself as part of the natural world, one expression of the many kinds of life that exist on the planet. He feels at home among other people and is open to their differences and experiences. He knows that one day he will die, like everyone else, but he accepts that as part of the cycle of life. What matters to him is that each person has a place in the world where they can find their own resources and thrive, just like a tree.
The song embodies a strong message of interconnectedness and harmony with nature. It invites us to reflect on our place in the world and the importance of our relationships with other people and the environment around us.

Lyrics
L'estate addosso
Pensando a cieli infuocati
Ai brevi amori infiniti
Respira questa libertà
L'estate e la libertà
L'estate addosso
Bellissima e crudele
Le stelle se le guardi
Non vogliono cadere
L'anello è sulla spiaggia
Tra un mare di lattine
La protezione zero
Spalmata sopra il cuore
L'estate addosso
L'estate addosso
Un anno è già passato
Vietato non innamorarsi ancora
Saluti dallo spazio
Le fragole maturano anche qua
Respira questa libertà
L'estat e la libertà
L'estate la libertà

Devo ringraziare
L' uomo
Più giovane
Di me

Meno di me
Mi ha dato la Rinascita
Dopo 8 anni
Dopo un matrimonio
Che non doveva esserci
Ma io portavo in grembo
Mio figlio
Essendo incinta
a 23 e mezzo
