He released his first albums under the Jovanotti byname to later switch into his real name (Lorenzo), as of the mid-nineties.
Most of his output is hip-hop influenced, although not most of his work should be viewed as hip hop music per se. Many of his songs are not hip hop related and may probably be best viewed as part of the earlier Italian cantautore tradition. Some of his earlier work is also closer to keyboard-heavy 1980s pop. Most of his songs are sung in the Italian language; he also released a Spanish-language greatest hits album. His live album includes a short version of the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight". Jovanotti appears on several international compilations, most notably Red Hot + Rhapsody, a 1998 tribute to George Gershwin, on which he performed "I Got Rhythm". Jovanotti has also appeared in one Luciano Pavarotti's charity concert in 1996.
His CD, Buon Sangue, includes influences from both rock and old school hip hop. It is one of his most innovative works to date. Edoardo Bennato collaborated on one track, while bass player Saturnino co-wrote two of the songs.
One of his most recent CDs, "Ora", breaks new ground with a new style of production.

The song "La Cattiva Strada" by Jovanotti tells the story of a man who travels down a bad path filled with deceit, theft, and manipulation. The lyrics describe various situations where the man interacts with innocent people and convinces them to follow him on his reckless journey. The first verse tells the story of a military parade where the man spits in the eye of an innocent person, who asks why. The man responds with "This is nothing, and now it's time for me to go", and the innocent person follows him. Assurdo! Non ci sono altre parole, è semplicemente assurdo, incredibile. Questa bellissima poesia di De André ruota su tre stupendi accordi che accompagnavano con perfetta sincronia il testo. Era davvero difficile stravolgere con un pessimo arrangamento quella armonia che esprimeva quella idea di viaggio, con grandissima semplicità ed efficacia, proprie di un artista, arrivando ad una musichetta sciatta ed un pessimo semi-recitato (non saprei come altro definirlo =) ) proprie di un burino!

@MrAngyGrimmy Sono perfettamente d'acordo con te. io ho conosciuto questa canzone prima in questa versione e devo dire che da Genovese, fan di Fabrizio, da uno che sa cantare creuza de ma con l'accento giusto, da uno che ha iniziato a suonare le prime canzoni intere proprio con il canzoniere del mitico faber, posso dire che il tono scanzonato e l'aria da vagabondaggio che jovanotti gli attribuisce sono perfetti. stronzi sentite gli applausi di genova in fondo al brano e mangiatevi la lingua.

Io penso che un omaggio sia un omaggio a prescindere da come esso venga eseguito o realizzato. Sicuramente l'intento di Jovanotti non era né quello di "rovinare" la canzone di Fabrizio De Andrè, né quello di mettersi al suo livello; ha solo voluto fare un omaggio a un artista che probabilmente stima. Non vedo il motivo di tanto astio. In ogni caso penso che la cosa migliore l'abbia detta MURRU. Tanto snobismo in una canzone che condanna proprio questo.

voi siete completamente pazzi!! questa e' una versione reggae, una versione diversa e, secondo me, bellissima...jovanotti NON e' Faber, e' questo concerto e' stato per un tributo. non capite che, per fare la stessa versione (gli arrangiamente, la tonalità della voce, ecc ecc), sarebbe terribile! per piacere, dovreste tenere tutti i pensieri cosi DENTRO. grazie!
