He released his first albums under the Jovanotti byname to later switch into his real name (Lorenzo), as of the mid-nineties.
Most of his output is hip-hop influenced, although not most of his work should be viewed as hip hop music per se. Many of his songs are not hip hop related and may probably be best viewed as part of the earlier Italian cantautore tradition. Some of his earlier work is also closer to keyboard-heavy 1980s pop. Most of his songs are sung in the Italian language; he also released a Spanish-language greatest hits album. His live album includes a short version of the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight". Jovanotti appears on several international compilations, most notably Red Hot + Rhapsody, a 1998 tribute to George Gershwin, on which he performed "I Got Rhythm". Jovanotti has also appeared in one Luciano Pavarotti's charity concert in 1996.
His CD, Buon Sangue, includes influences from both rock and old school hip hop. It is one of his most innovative works to date. Edoardo Bennato collaborated on one track, while bass player Saturnino co-wrote two of the songs.
One of his most recent CDs, "Ora", breaks new ground with a new style of production.

L'odore della strada dopo che ha piovuto
Non vergognarti mai di un dono ricevuto
Ti guardo uscire e un po' mi sembra
Che vai sulla luna
E la distanza aumenta
E non sei più la mia bambina
I rami tuoi si allungano a cercare aria
La tua vita
La tua storia
Che non è scritta nelle stelle
E nel passato
Puoi disegnarla col dito
Sul vetro appannato
Scolpirla nella montagna
Legarla ad un aquilone
Hai già imparato a non difenderti dalle emozioni
Come tua madre
Sei bella quando sorridi
Quell'aria che puoi fare tutto
Quando lo decidi
Le mani in tasca per il freddo che ti ghiaccia il naso
Lo sguardo basso per far finta di non farci caso
Al cuore in gola
Agli ostacoli scuri
Le guance rosse
Come frutti maturi
Vorrei
Portarti in fondo alla notte
Mostrarti il sole che sorge
Stringerti forte a me
E poi lasciarti andare
Vorrei
Che tu fossi felice
Come quando uno dice
Questo posto MI piace
E anche se non c'è pace
Ci posso camminare
Libera, libera, libera
Ci voglio camminare
Libera, libera, libera
Senti
L'odore della vita che non dà tregua
È amaro e dolce
E più ci provi a capirlo più non si spiega cos'è
Quel filo che ci lega
Che lega tutto a te
Che lega te e me
Più di un dovere più un sentimento
È la materia stessa di cui è fatto il mondo
DI cui è fatto il tempo
Che fa girare I pianeti
Fa partorire I delfini
Brilla negli orecchini
Vorrei
Portarti in fondo alla notte
Mostrarti il sole che sorge
Stringerti forte a me
E poi lasciarti andare
Vorrei
Che tu fossi felice
Come quando uno dice
Questo posto mi piace
E anche se non c'è pace
Ci posso camminare
Libera, libera, libera
Ci voglio camminare
Libera, libera, libera
Libera
Vorrei
Portarti in fondo alla notte
Mostrarti il sole che sorge
Stringerti forte a me
E poi lasciarti andare
Vorrei
Che tu fossi felice
Come quando uno dice
Questo posto mi piace
E anche se non c'è pace
Ci voglio camminare
Libera
Jovanotti’s song “Libera” is about watching someone you love grow up and become independent. The beginning of the song describes the smell of the street after it rains and emphasizes the importance of appreciating gifts you receive. The singer is watching their loved one (presumably a daughter) grow and change, and it’s bittersweet. The lyrics mention how she doesn’t need to defend herself from emotions, possibly referencing the way society often pressures women to suppress their feelings. The singer encourages her to embrace her journey and create her own destiny, one that isn’t predetermined by societal expectations.
The chorus is a repetition of “libera,” which means “free” in Italian. The singer wants their loved one to be free to live their life the way they want, without any constraints. They reference the beauty of the world, the complexity of life, and the invisible connections that tie us all together. They continue to encourage their loved one to take risks and explore new places and ideas, even if it means leaving the singer behind. The chorus is repeated again, emphasizing the theme of freedom and liberation.
Overall, the song is a celebration of independence, growth, and the beauty of life. It encourages the listener to cherish their journey and never stop exploring.
