He released his first albums under the Jovanotti byname to later switch into his real name (Lorenzo), as of the mid-nineties.
Most of his output is hip-hop influenced, although not most of his work should be viewed as hip hop music per se. Many of his songs are not hip hop related and may probably be best viewed as part of the earlier Italian cantautore tradition. Some of his earlier work is also closer to keyboard-heavy 1980s pop. Most of his songs are sung in the Italian language; he also released a Spanish-language greatest hits album. His live album includes a short version of the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight". Jovanotti appears on several international compilations, most notably Red Hot + Rhapsody, a 1998 tribute to George Gershwin, on which he performed "I Got Rhythm". Jovanotti has also appeared in one Luciano Pavarotti's charity concert in 1996.
His CD, Buon Sangue, includes influences from both rock and old school hip hop. It is one of his most innovative works to date. Edoardo Bennato collaborated on one track, while bass player Saturnino co-wrote two of the songs.
One of his most recent CDs, "Ora", breaks new ground with a new style of production.

Televisione televisione
chi e' il piu' bello del rione?
televisione televisione
fammi vincere un milione
televisione televisione
chi e' che c'ha il piu' bel faccione?
televisione televisione
tu che dai l'informazione
tu che svolgi la missione
verso tutte le persone
tu che sei la nostra chiesa
e la nostra religione
tu che ci accompagni a cena a merenda e a colazione
televisione televisione
pubblicita'!
"Noo, non esiste sporco impossibile!"
televisione televisione
sempre piu' definizione
di ogni emerito scienziato
ci riporti l'opinione
tutta gente molto onesta
senza grilli per la testa
che si prodiga e che fa
il bene della societa'
televisione televisione
pubblicita'!
"To-totip, to-totip totip!"
televisione televisione
televisione televisione
tutto il bene che tu hai fatto
te lo stai prendendo indietro
richiudendo ogni pensiero dentro scatole di vetro
televisione televisione
io ti chiudo nell'armadio
questa sera stai in castigo
perche' accendero' la radio!
In the song "Televisione Televisione" by Jovanotti, the artist uses satire to criticize the power and influence of television in our lives. He paints a picture of a society that is obsessed with television, where people's worth is determined by their appearance, and their opinions are shaped by what they see on the screen. The lyrics question the role television plays in shaping our perceptions, our values, and our sense of self-worth. The repeated line "televisione televisione" highlights the overwhelming presence of television in our lives, and the reference to winning a million through television demonstrates how we have been conditioned to believe that television holds the key to our happiness.
Jovanotti also critiques the role of advertising in television. The line "pubblicita" (advertising) is repeated throughout the song, suggesting the idea that television is nothing more than a vehicle for advertisements. He questions the veracity of commercial claims, mocking the advertisement slogan, "Non esiste sporco impossibile" (no dirt is impossible to clean). Jovanotti seems to be pointing out the superficiality and artificiality of television culture, insisting that it is just a means of control by the powerful.
The song is ultimately a call for viewers to be more critical of what they see on television and to question the messages and values being promoted. It calls for a reclaiming of individual agency and the rejection of societal pressures that dictate the importance of superficial qualities like looks and material possessions.
