He released his first albums under the Jovanotti byname to later switch into his real name (Lorenzo), as of the mid-nineties.
Most of his output is hip-hop influenced, although not most of his work should be viewed as hip hop music per se. Many of his songs are not hip hop related and may probably be best viewed as part of the earlier Italian cantautore tradition. Some of his earlier work is also closer to keyboard-heavy 1980s pop. Most of his songs are sung in the Italian language; he also released a Spanish-language greatest hits album. His live album includes a short version of the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight". Jovanotti appears on several international compilations, most notably Red Hot + Rhapsody, a 1998 tribute to George Gershwin, on which he performed "I Got Rhythm". Jovanotti has also appeared in one Luciano Pavarotti's charity concert in 1996.
His CD, Buon Sangue, includes influences from both rock and old school hip hop. It is one of his most innovative works to date. Edoardo Bennato collaborated on one track, while bass player Saturnino co-wrote two of the songs.
One of his most recent CDs, "Ora", breaks new ground with a new style of production.
The Sound of Sunshine

A volte gira bene a volta gira male, è buffo
Non so nuotare e faccio un tuffo
Oh yes
Eccomi!
Splende un grande sole su di me
That's the sound of sunshine coming down
(Il battito del sole)
And that's the sound of sunshine coming down
(Su di noi, su di noi, su di noi)
(Aye, aye, ayeehey)
I saw my friend Bobby he said "wat's up man?"
You gotta little work or a twenty to lend?
I opened up my hand
He said I'm glad to see
They can take away my job but not my friends you see
And here I am just waiting for this storm to pass me by
That's the sound of sunshine (of sunshine) coming down
And that's the sound of sunshine coming down
In the ocean, and the girls so sweet
So kick of your shoes and relax your feet
They say that miracles are never ceasin'
And every single soul needs a little realeasin'
And that's the sound of sunshine (of sunshine) coming down
And that's the sound of sunshine coming down
You're the one I want to be with
Sei tu quella con cui voglio stare
You're the one I want to be with
Quanto il sole cade dietro il mare
You're the one I want to be with
Sei tu quella con cui voglio stare
You're the one I want to be with
Quanto il sole cade dietro il mare
That's the sound of sunshine (of sunshine) coming down
And that's the sound of sunshine coming down
When the sun goes down
When the sun goes down
The lyrics of Jovanotti's song, "The Sound of Sunshine," are all about finding the beauty in life every day, even when things don't always go according to plan. The song opens with the singer waking up and realizing that despite what people may have said, the day ahead is full of endless possibilities. He sets out to earn himself a good meal and dinner, but recognizes that life is unpredictable and that pandemonium can strike at any moment. The singer realizes he can't swim but still takes a dive, enjoying the feeling of floating and breathing with his head above water, just as flowers do. The chorus repeats the sounds of the sunshine coming down upon them as they wait out the storm.
Later, the singer meets with his friend Bobby, and they lament about the troubles they've been experiencing. Bobby asks for a small loan, and the singer realizes that in life, some things can be taken away, but the power of friendship remains powerful. Together they listen to Spearhead, and the singer finds comfort in the sound of their rhythm. He recalls that "all good things will pass," and even when the day turns bleak, he can still appreciate the sound of the sunshine coming down.
Overall, the song captures the sensation that regardless of what is going on in the world, the warm comfort of the sun's shining rays lets us appreciate the simple joys of life.
