Super White Man
Jowan Safadi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello white people
I hope you're doing fine
I got a message for you
From Palestine
Where everyone is some kind of refugee
No one was left behind to drawn in the sea
Maybe the difference was
That they were all white
And claim to have a god given right
To take my home and call it their own
And so the refugee was now me
You see?

Oh, super white man
Salamo alikom
How does it feel
To solve your problems
And create one for me?
And when will I be free?

They told me everything about the holocaust
But no one told me why
I should pay the cost
They played wars
And told me that I lost
And all the losers were forced to flee
You see?

Oh, super white man
Salamo alikom
How does it feel
To solve your problems
And create one for me?
And when will I be free?

Oh no white people
No need to be afraid
We're just escaping
The mess that you made
We'll never play as dirty as you played
We love our countries
If you'd just let us be

Oh-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Oh-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Oh-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Oh-la-la-la-la
Oh-la-la-la-la-la

So super white man?
What about the black man?
What about the brown man?
What about the red man?
What about the yellow man?
What about the woman?
What about me?

Oh, super white man
Salamo alikom
How does it feel
To solve your problems

And create one for me?
And when will I be free?

Overall Meaning

Jowan Safadi's song "Super White Man" is a powerful critique of white privilege and imperialism. The lyrics address the Palestinian plight through the eyes of a refugee seeking answers from those who claim to be superior. The opening lyrics "Hello white people/ I hope you're doing fine/ I got a message for you/ From Palestine" bluntly sets up the tone of the song. The Palestinian refugee crisis is at the forefront of the song and Safadi directly addresses the West and Israel for appropriating and settling on Palestinian land. His statement "Maybe the difference was/ That they were all white/ And claim to have a god given right/ To take my home and call it their own" specifically calls out the British Mandate and the Zionist Federation, who were white colonialists claiming a divine right to a place that was never theirs to begin with.

Safadi passionately questions why he should be paying the cost for the holocaust, reminding the listener that the holocaust was not fought on Palestinian land. He questions why he should have to pay the price for a war he never fought, undermining the principle that those who suffer have the right to make others suffer, too. His questions culminate in the final verse where he demands an explanation for everyone, including people of color and women, on the impact of the white savior complex on their lives.

Overall, "Super White Man" condemns the idea of white superiority and the perversion of religious belief to legitimize colonialism. It is a call to action for all people who seek to examine the ways they have benefited from the systems of oppression that continue to divide and harm people around the world.
